Evelyn - my total weakness

What can I say? I'm a sucker for Evelyn's beautiful color and silken sheen. She threw out an octopus arm which I pegged down. No extra blooms along it. After 2 years pruned it back. She's so-so resistant to black spot (no spray garden).

I love Evelyn, too! Unfortunately I lost her several years ago. But not to despair--I ordered another from Chamblees today. So, she'll be on her way shortly. Maybe I'll have some pics of Evelyn to share this fall.

Thanks Nastarana - i have NO plans to SP any roses (even the PO's old HT's that died off and left me with a handfull of Dr. Huey's are enjoying a place on a far off fence that needed some color) I just came in from doing some early spring cleaning it he yard. I got a bug up my ... and pruned back all the roses about 1/2 way. They all showed signs of new red bud growth so I dont think I did a bad deed - Evelyn was among these. I hit her hard (ok, for me it was hard pruning, im a real light-weight on the pruning thing, big yard so I like pig plants). Wish me and the roses luck in a month or so ...

CM - Go easy with the additional fertilizer, Instead, consider pruning to remove broken sections and encourage new bud breaks. I learned last year that by allowing my plants to grow full, they grew too full and literally split in half. The farm where I buy my tubers suggested that I top-pinch early to force bud break and provide a more balanced foundation to support the plant's fuller growth later in the season. I posted pictures earlier depicting this process. Frankly, we too often go to fertilizer or water to remedy what is ailing our plants with the result often not being to our liking. Also, using a 1:1 ratio fertilizer will result in a balanced response by the treated plant. Essentially, with none of the three macro's being greater than the other, the resulting growth will be modest, healthy and free of any type of exaggerated response as is often experienced with specialized fertilizer ratio applications.

Jin, I have no clue about Lady Megginch but she is gorgeous! I do remember you saying you were growing her which has inspired me to try it (guniea pig thing again Haha!). It would be gorgeous if she climbs like Evelyn! You might be able to peg her on a fence or wrap her on a obelisk getting her horizontal as possible. I have some Evelyns on Doc Huey that I got from the DA website. I would really like to get some grafted onto Fortuniana. I think SoFL Rose has a large Evelyn grafted onto Fort that climbs and does well for her.. I have found my Fort grafted roses to be more black spot resistant as well as more vigorous. Miss Diva, Evelyn definitely gets black spot here. She is a shameless hussy who drops all her clothes (leaves) and pouts :/ My Evelyns, I just tied to a 10ft wide sections of wire fence that is held up bt T posts, trying to get branches horizontal as possible. I wanted to try 'espaliering' some roses and thats the only way to do it in the Sunny areas of the yard because our fenced section of the property is in shade! Lala, your Evelyn is gorgeous. She looks like a dessert!

Jeri is absolutely correct about EVELYN. I don't recommend this rose unless you get some kind of winter. The same goes for THE PILGRIM. Another key to success is growing it own root, which holds the vigor down. Even then, once established you are going to have to keep after it with the pruners. Either that or train it horizontally like she suggested. My favorite way is simply to give her lots of room so the canes can naturally bend over and arch. Things I really like about EVELYN are the perfect flower form, luminous pastel color, strong fruity fragrance (think peaches), straight stems, and vase life. So many English Roses nod their blooms on weak necks and blow too quickly to make good vase flowers, not to mention the obnoxious myrrh fragrance. EVELYN doesn't have these problems. The David Austin folks have phased EVELYN out and are actively trying to discourage people from growing the rose because it is no longer under patent; a business practice I despise and has soured me to the company. They are pushing BATHSHEBA as an improvement. Maybe so, but it is ANOTHER myrrh scented rose. I've had it with them. Treasure your EVELYN because in a few years she might be extinct outside of home gardens. No online rose vendor is selling her anymore. She is a real collectors item.

I got my first Evelyn this year! She's not in the ground yet, but has already given me two beautiful blooms! She certainly is special!

Wow!! Lovely pictures.
I just found out that Evelyn is pronounced EVElyn. Who knew? Not me. :)

I have Evelyn too as a new plant last year. Didn't notice any smell. Maybe needs more time to mature.

I don't grow Evelyn--she doesn't make the disease-resistance cut--but I sure love viewing other people's Evelyn's. Yours is beautiful!

I've never made an all Evelyn bouquet, I don't think. I use her in mixed bouquets, and at least once a year in a bouquet with light pink Sarah Bernhardt peonies, which I love. I will have to try an all Evelyn bouquet, and yes, I think it will be gorgeous. It's nice to meet another E fan, Iris Gal. Diane

Oh Nana, I love that bouquet, it looks devine!...although I can't tell which is Evelyn and which is the peony : p

But I also love the whole picture: the vase, the lovely decorations around it, and particularly the porcelain bunny in the background lol

'Sarah Bernhardt'! I would pass out in rhapsody if she would bloom here. After maybe 10 years of only foliage from 'Festiva Maxima' I concede defeat on herbaceous peonies.

I've just got into peonies, and one of mine is Sarah Benrhardt. STUNNING!!!!!

But my Evelyn is nowhere near as gorgeous as the ones everyone here have posted. Maybe when it matures a bit.

Thanks for your nice comments, Rosybunny. One Evelyn is the very large flat bloom, front and center; below it is a smaller, not fully opened Evelyn, with a more apricot color. I love that little porcelain bunny you mentioned. It was my late mother's and she got in Denmark. Very precious to me.
Iris gal, I think it's just too hot for peonies in your zone--California is great for roses, but peonies need winter chill, so it's not your fault you got no blooms. Sarah is by far my favorite of the peonies I grow. What a classic--must be well over 100 years old. Diane
