Traditionally, before the technology of refrigerating them was developed, most new roses were planted as bare-roots in the late fall. Transplanting roses as bare-roots is much the easiest way to do it. In your zone, there is a risk that a warm December could cause roses to grow out, freeze back, and deplete the plants or even kill some of them. However, that's the way I'd do it, as opposed to the expense and labor of potting. Just dig them with 12" roots and canes, strip all leaves, label them and bag them. Store in the shade until you can plant. They should keep well at temperatures mostly between 25 and 40 degrees Remove any growth buds that break before spring. After planting, spray the canes with dormant-strength Wilt Pruf.

My first guess was Fragrant Cloud, too. But I've never seen leaves that small or that dense on mine. Tropicana looks like a good guess! I don't have that one, but looked at photos of it on helpmefind and there are a couple posted of the bush by "smoner4" on pgs. 9 and 11 on the photos tab that look similar to your plant. Is Tropicana fragrant? FC is VERY fragrant! Noting the fragrance might help narrow down your choices, too. Good luck!

Dr. Huey rootstock has taken over whatever rose was originally there. Dr. Huey is rather charming rambler type, but has the following deficiencies: once-bloomer (spring), post blooming develops the worst case of BS you'll probably ever see, followed by complete defoliation. The following spring, the same pattern will be repeated, and so on. Although some people grow it as part of their garden, most rose gardeners dig it out and replace it with that rose they've been longing for, you know, the one that makes their heart sing. Woot! A positive ID, and such a lovely one too! I look forward to it flowering all summer for many years to come. Interestingly, this is the second potential link I've found to Portland. I do wonder who the rose lover was. On to pink rose #3. This rose is about 6' tall, upright, and shows no signs of pruning. It's quite vigorous and is pushing new canes up from the ground. It's growing in the roots of a Western Red Cedar that is at least 100 years old (we've seen it in aerial photos from the 1920s, and it wasn't small then). Quite thorny, this one is a repeat bloomer that bloomed continually all summer last year and has no hips. It's growing in a different area than the majority of the roses, so it could be from a different era, although so far they all seem to be from around the same time period. The buds are a coral pink, but it blooms out to a somewhat shocking bright pink. Someone who gardened here was a pink lover - the majority of roses are pink as are most of my 30' tall rhododendrons.
