I think you have two different things going on there! That could be an artemisia in the background, but those arenÂt artemisia flowersÂwhich arenÂt what most people would call flowers!.

If youÂre sure the flowers are coming from the silvery foliage, it could be Anthemis x hybrida ÂKelwayi (a/k/a A. tinctoria ÂKelwayiÂ) I canÂt see the foliage well enough to be sure, but itÂs the closest thing I can think of!

Just looking at the picture made me gasp! I hate spiders. I'm trying to come to terms with them in the garden. I even let a small one spin a web among my potato plants because I figured he was doing me a favor by eating the bad bugs. "The enemy of my enemy..." and all that.

I think he was eaten by a bigger spider, then I had to dump soil around my potatoes to hill them, and now I see they're getting holes in them, so it's rotenone time.

Hey, check this out (from Wikipedia)! I've always just thought of them as not-likely-to-be-dangerous garden spiders. They can be found most everywhere at times including in my goldenrod:

"Misumena vatia is a species of crab spider with holarctic distribution. In North America, where it the largest and most well-known flower spider, it is called the Goldenrod crab spider, because it is commonly found hunting in Goldenrod sprays in the autumn.

Females can grow up to 10mm (without legs), males reach 5mm at most.

Young females in the early summer may be quite small and easily overlooked. These spiders may be yellow or white, depending on the flower in which they are hunting. Especially younger females, which may hunt on a variety of flowers such as daisies and sunflowers, may change color "at will" (aggressive mimicry). Older females require large amounts of relatively large prey to produce the best possible clutch of eggs. They are, therefore, in North America most commonly found in Goldenrod (Solidago sp.), a bright yellow flower which attracts large numbers of insects, especially in autumn. So, what is this, that is often found in my yard? My field biology books are put away somewhere in the basement, or I'd attempt to look it up. Yeah, I'm feeling very tired and lazy at the moment.

I'm growing Anthemis 'Kelwayi' but I'm not sure that's what you have. I also thought those were two separate plants like Skybird did. It looks like your flowers are on stalks with broader leaves, unless that's a bindweed leaf or something else I'm noticing. Are you sure the yellow flowers aren't growing up *through* some Artemesia? My Kelwayi has more leaves of a similar shape but they are more complex, more ferny, than what you show.

Does the foliage make you itch or irritate your skin when it brushes against you? Mine does that. Does the plant reseed itself like a weed all around your property? Mine does that. Mine are in full bloom right now.

Cnetter, I think that's the common "garden spider" or "orb weaver". I usually don't notice them until end of summer/early fall, then they seem to pop up all over.

I have always liked snakes, but spiders give me the heebie-geebies!

Cnetter, if it has a huge body and small legs like it looks like from the picture...you may have a cat-faced spider or Araneus gemmoides. They are really cool and harmless to people. We get at least one every year.

Still like J's goldenrod spider the best. Color changes are quite fashionable and the white looks absolutely harmless - style and substance. I need to get them out of bouquets however as they may freak people out.

A little something from WSU e - the photographs look about the same as Lindy Loo & Stevation suggest: "The common cat face spider is representative of orb weaver spiders . . . The female spider laid her eggs in the lab and died just as I was photographing her. This is a "CharlotteÂs Web" scenario. . . Cat face spiders and other members of the Family Araeniidae are extremely beneficial natural enemies of many garden insects . . ."

I love my spider and have named him or her George. I like the stripes and the puffy marshmallow body. I know, some think it is gross/icky/scary. As long as it isn't the kind of spider that will bite me and leave a red lump on my arm for four years like that spider in Pacific Grove did to me. Darn nasty spider!!

Okay, I am almost 100% sure that the flowers are the same as the grey foliage and it doesn't bother my skin. It is the only one in my garden and must have been planted by someone else. It is also the first thing that popped up in that bed after winter so I'm positive that the flowers and plant go together. All that other riff raff showed up later. Speaking of which, I need to pull on some of that stuff, it is taking over!

I'm just glad the spider is cute and the flower is bright and hardy...

I must add that while in Half Moon Bay, CA, we saw one of the biggest spiders I've ever seen. We were convinced it was an alien pod or maybe an alien baby!! Actually it was some kind of Araneus. Oh, I also thought it could be a living, killer tomato. The photo I'm adding isn't my own, but it is cool. I swear that the one we saw was way bigger.

Well, I may have figured it out with Skybird's help. I think it could be Anthemis punctata cupaniana. That is the closest I can get to both flower and foliage. The flower seems to come in white with yellow centers for that particular species, but the foliage looks so much more like my plant than the kelwayi. Here, have a look if interested:

Hmmmm... I still don't think it's Anthemis. The leaves on that last anthemis you posted still seem more serrated than your leaves. I noticed that about my leaves compared to yours too. Yours have smooth teeth (I mean the little needle-like leaf parts), while anthemis has a more compound structure, with serrated teeth.

I think your flower is similar to anthemis, but there are probably dozens of garden flowers that have that same large-centered daisy shape.
