Name That Rose!

can anyone identify this old rose?

These roses are growing at the edge of my neighbors driveway and have been there since he was young(hes in his early 40s). They were planted by his mother and he has no idea what they might be. I would like to take some cuttings of them to root for my yard.

What I do know about them is very limited.

They both have a strong rose scent.

Both blossoms are 2 2/1 across

The lighter one is slightly pinker than the picture shows

Do they bloom only in spring or repeat all season?

Your rose looks similar to a rose in the Sacramento Cemetery, our found rose, "Dr Peck's 12th Avenue Smoothie" is thornless, once blooming. Very fragrant. This found rose is thought to be the same as the Charles Lawson in commerce. Below is a link to a photo I took in the cemetery a few years ago. I liked this rose so much that I propagated it and planted it in my yard even though it is a once bloomer. It is quite vigorous and now takes up the back corner along the fence. It looks like Teasing Georgia. I love those flowers in the vase ! Would you please let us know how tall the bush is, and what zone you are in? I always like Teasing Georgia but I'm concerned about how tall it might get for my abundant rain zone 5a area.

I'm wondering - traditionally a Pyx (host holder) would be a round lidded affair about the size of a pocket watch; usually in gold or silver. Although folk art examples do exist world wide made from available local materials. Thinking also to the "Trial of the Pyx" in the UK where newly minted coins are presented to a jury to confirm they meet required standards. The coins are presented in a box called a pyx. I'd question any religious significance in this case.

Some roses *abhor* being pruned, and will die back from the point they are cut. Some teas (true teas, NOT hybrid teas), chinas, and even some close species hybrids resent anything but the lightest pruning. The "all roses take to heavy pruning...' should ONLY refer to modern hybrids, such as hybrid teas, floribundas, etc. Even some polyanthas resent heavy pruning, as they tend to produce the sprouts for their next flush just behind the current panicle. But anyway...yes, we need a photo. Add it in a new comment, and make sure you let the photo fully load (it will go from faded, to sharp/clear) before you hit submit.

No, definitely not Cornelia, leaves are very different and the bloom is also not Cornelia. Leaves look like some rugosas are in the parentage of this one.

Could it be Blanc Double de Coubert, a rugusa hybrid.

Definitely not Blanc Double de Coubert. That rose is nearly all white. This one is a very pale pink. Thanks for trying to ID it.

From what I remember from last year,it only blooms in the spring. The darker one in the other picture also seems to only bloom in the spring. This is really a shame since they are both so beautiful and smell heavenly. Nice strong rose scent,not like the newer ones that are somewhat washed out in the scent department for the sake of beautiful, long lasting blooms.

One other thing about this rose that may be useful. Neither one gets over 3-4 feet tall. They both stay kinda small. I am not sure if this is due to their growing conditions or their heritage. They also do not sprawl all over the place but stay somewhat compact in their growing.

It looks just like Henry Hudson. They are hybrid rugosa from the Explorer series. Hope this helps you ID it.

The Henry Hudson looks VERY close to the rose I want to start. Hopefully this is what it is.

Sorry, but this is not Terese Bugnet. Terese Bugnet has very distinctive oblong leaves, and the bloom isn't quite right either. The petals have a slightly scalloped look.
