I went to Ventura County Fair yesterday. I took a few shots of plumeria garden to share.

And, the winner of division - Candy Stripe

Hey boom_to !!!

Thanks for sharing the pix of the Plumies !!!

I like seeing the pix of the Morange Family as those are some of my favorite Plumies and it was great to see the family tree and all of them together !!!

Are there Plumeria vendors out there? I'd like to make the trip out there and see if they do !!!

Hi Rodney,
The last day of the fair is on Sunday. Yesterday there was only one vender that sold tropical plants. All plants are gorgeous but Plumies were a bit pricy (1 gallon for $20) comparing to a local Nursery. I will be there again tomorrow (Wed.) as it is a Dollar Day ($1 for admission). I might buy one if the vendor has what I am looking for. There were a lot of cuttings for sale but they looked pretty green to me. You might be interested in other tropical plants such as Gloriosa Lily, Hawaiian Red Ti, Brugs, .....and etc. I should have taken pictures of the store.

We have participated for several years in our county fair. We have used a theme of 'garden junk' very successfully for two of those years. We've had planted lunch boxes, a pond made in a set of washtubs, wind chimes made from kitchen items and on and on. We have a binder of pictures from the web so people can get even more ideas. Along with this, we have done "Ask the Master Gardener". Folks are encouraged to ask questions of the MGs who are present and forms are left at the display when the booth isn't manned. We had one contest called 'name the weed' and another called 'name the plant'. Participants placed their answers on a form and dropped them into a box after they had studied the live plants that we supplied. Winners were awarded a collection of perennials from MG gardens. We also made a display in an old aquarium. It was the items needed to make compost stacked so that they could be seen through the glass. Little boys seemed to like this one. We considered adding a rubber snake or something to make their studying enjoyable for them. We have posters with pictures of local gardens that we use as a backdrop to whatever we are doing. The pictures are identified as to what kind of garden it is and who did the gardening. We also order seeds in bulk to give away. I'm sure there are some things I'm forgetting. Our group enjoys putting together a display and manning it in the evenings so we can promote our program and answer gardening questions.

You and the young ones really did well at the fair. Bet all your entries looked super, super yummy. I'm glad you got in a rant to the fair board about the ribbons for the kids. Kids are so proud when they get a ribbon, even if its just a "participant" ribbon. I'd planned on entering several items in canning and baking classes this year, but they have their check in times which are during the time I have to be on the road to get up to my radiation treatments at the VA hospital in Indianapolis and I have no one else to drop them off for me. I probably will enter a pie or two in the pie contest because the time you enter them is late in the afternoon and I can get there then. They've always had classes in the pie contest for crisps, cobblers and tarts, but they've cut that out. Was a little disappointed in that. All new people in the Extention Office and I guess they didn't want to be bothered with them. Its a shame because they were very popular.

The night before entering the fair, I broke the glass in Ranch Hands' frame. I figured 'what the heck' and took it in anyway. The judges told me had the picture been under glass (the photo also got crinkled a bit in the glass accident) I would have won Grand. As it was I settled for a blue and a nod to the state fair. "SimmyJames" was judged blue with an honorable mention. It will also go to the state fair. To be honest, I don't recall which photo(s) were judged Grand Champions. I'm a real competitive person, aren't I? Am I disappointed? Heck no. The hands are those of my brother and his little boy Seth. Seth had been left behind that morning and was NOT happy wit h his Dad. He latched onto Daddy's finger and wasn't about to let go! Moments like this are why I carry a camera. Thanks for the compliments! Lori Lori

To sum it up, there are three huge fires in California right now (along with some smaller ones that are not causing such concern at this time). Two are near Los Angeles and Ventura County. Jeri described them for us. (So very glad you are safe, Jeri!) One of those is just down the road from the dance hall/bar in Thousand Oaks were the mass shooting took place just days ago. I thought of Jim Delahanty who lived in Thousand Oaks, and how grieved he would have been at the recent events. Over 200,000 people have been evacuated from that area, and apparently there have been 2 deaths. The third fire is the Camp Fire in Butte County that destroyed the town of Paradise, CA in under 24 hours. At the current count 23 people died there. If you look on a map, it is located near Chico, and north of Sacramento. It is now 20% contained, but predictions are that unless we get rain, it will burn for the rest of the month. At this point, more houses have burned in this fire than in any other wildfire in California's history, even more than last year's fire in Santa Rosa. If you add in the evacuations there (a more rural part of the state), we are up to a quarter of a million displaced people. We have not yet had any rain in most of the state, and rain is what we need. We will be in dangerous fire conditions until the winter rains start. Here in the Bay Area we have smoky, polluted air, dangerous for babies (there is one in our house) and people with certain medical conditions, but compared to what is going on elsewhere, we are very lucky indeed. Counting our blessings as Thanksgiving Day approaches, and wishing the best for all.

What the poster did not say was the pictures were copied without giving credit to Milton Pierson who took them for the Plumeria People gallery in 2002 even though the gallery pages request credit be given if used. I also personally doubt the correctness of four of the flowers (bill,katie, julie,the yellow in Jeannie- the bill looks just like a katie, the katie look like???; julie is yellow with a redish splash on the edge, and check the next picture below the poster to see a jeannie) and i am confused on the winner which does not look like any candy stripe I have ever seen. It is all so confusing. We need gene testing- paternity tests and maternity tests so we know what we are buying. Bill

Hi boom,
Great pictures, thanks for showing them. Wish I could have gone. I question candy stripe, think is suppose to be a barber pole, red, white and think yellow, star shape flowers., had one, lost it.

Jeannie morange sure looked good. Tells me what my plant may look like someday, needs to grow!

I got your points and thanks for pointing them out. I did't know how accurate the family tree was also, just thought that it was very interesting to see.

When I saw the "Candy Stripe", as on the label, from far away, I thought it was Singapore or something. However, it couldn't be because Singapore had different look of leaves. The label said Candy Stripe. I wonder if it is possible that humidity and heat effect color of flowers.

Unfortunately, something coming up, I can't revisit the fair today as I intended to.

It would be nice if we had actual tests to determine parentage. You can see how much we disagree on this forum so someone takes a kaneohe sunrise and sells it as a Jeannie jr and that person sells cuttings, etc. For example, I have seen many candy stripes and all have had very long, thin multi-colored petals. The colors are fairly bright with a red/pink stripe on one side of the petal and then yellow fading to white on the other side. Even the big dealers confuse me. Exotic has sold what looks like a minature candy stripe as a lei rainbow whereas other dealers sell a Nebel's rainbow as the lei rainbow. What is the truth? Bill
