Just bought another Cycas thouarsii. Saw large ones on eBay and I do like the blue leaves. Will keep it warmer this time--it's more a tropical, FAST grower. TZ, funny thing about cycads, many prefer LARGE pots (with excellent draining soil). Palm people are so used to under-potting their palms (to their benefit), but to the detriment of the cycads!

My revolutas (along with the Queens, Meds, Washingtonias and a few others) are still outside and are the last to get protected. Most of the cycads are kept cold but relatively frostfree till spring.

Good idea Laura! Here are 2 pics of the cycads I have. My sago palm is still outside so I didnt get a chance to take a pic of it.

My Dioon spinulosum is doing great in the unheated garage. Im a little worried about it not adjusting to the strong sunlight when spring comes, so I will have to keep it in shade for a while when it goes back outside for the spring just in case.

Im at work so I cant post pics untill I get home.

TZ, regarding the sunlight bleaching of your plants. Yes, keep them in deep shade for maybe a week and then introduce more direct sun. Cycads make the transition relatively well. So minor bleaching but not too bad.

Thanks Nj! I will try my best to do that this year. I dont have a lot of shade in my yard (especially in early spring), but I think the plants will really be happy if I can find as much shade as possible for them all.

Here's a pic of my oldest cycad.--Obviously, it's a C.revoluta. God knows how long ago I bought it--about 30 years ago. Is there a general rule of thumb to estimating its age based on the thickness of the trunk. It's about 4 feet tall. I noticed it was beginning to pup. Today, I moved it along with the other revolutas into their winter shelter. Still have out a large P. canariensis and equally Med fan--another of the Meds is in the ground. The revolutas go into protection from early December till about early March. Will post others later.--Brrr...getting cold here now!

That is one awesome looking Cycad Nj!!! Im bringing my Sago inside tonight. The fronds on it are all curved inward from the sun it was getting during its last flush and it looks terrible. I hope it makes a normal flush next spring!

Spring please Spring Please please quick mild winter haha ;)

No snow here yet, but Im sure it will be coming soon! Its definitely cold enough! I cant wait until spring, but at least I have time to get some ideas for the yard (a majority of which I probably wont follow when spring comes). I hope we all have a mild winter, but it looks like we wont be having a mild December!

you mean Zamia intergrifolia? The cones are in too much dark... could be either male or female, though male looks more likely from the smooth edges of the cones.

I found three different names for the same species:

Zamia floridana
Zamia pumila
Zamia intergrifolia

They seem to be used synonymously.

Will try to get better pictures of the cones. These guys must produce cones when really young because none of my other cycads has had any yet.

The have a few, but the only one that no one else has mentioned is a Giant Spotted Zamia (Zamia variegata). I mainly stick to palms, but this cycad was a "must have" for me. The one I have is still pretty small but am looking forward to it growing!

Zamia floridana is certainly a synonym for Zamia integrifolia, but Zamia pumila is a different species (Dominican, I think)... that species differs only in a different colored fruit, and having itty bitty teeth at the ends of the leaves, while integrifolia's leaves are smooth at the tips. Otherwise, they are very similar.

Nothing special here. I only have 6 King Sagos. 2 of them are quite large. Not sure how old they are, but they have about a foot or so of trunk. I got them over a year ago now I think at a home depot for 30 bucks each. I was kind of floored by how inexpensive they were for the size. I have two others that are about 8" of trunk each, and two smaller ones. I leave them out until about Dec 1, then bring them in. The do see several freezes each winter before I bring them in, and frost as well. I like doing this because it hardens them off and keeps the hardiness up. So far they have been just fine. The two big ones I put in the basement (thank god I have one now) near window that gets some sun, but not much, and pretty much do not water them most of the winter. Maybe just a little bit of water once or twice in 3 months. They go back out in mid march and might take another freeze or frost or two. I dont really start watering them heavily/ normally until the frost / freezes have stopped completely. Last year this worked brilliantly and they they put out a big flush in June which is now fully grown and hardened off. The smaller ones have yet to flush for me. The big ones appear to have already set a flush for next spring so I'm expecting that once they get back out and warm up theyll do it all over again. Hopefully the smaller ones will flush this year too.

I was just casually looking around online and came across this pic and thought WOW is this thing a Sago?? If so it must be at least one thousand years old since it's so tall.

I thought it was a coniferous tree at first but those look like Sago leaves and a Sago trunk.

No, not a cycad, but Araucaria heterophylla (Norfolk Island Pine). Though, cycads and araucaria are both very primitive in evolutionary terms and are more closely related to each other than either is to palms (which are flowering plants). I originally bought my Norfolk Island as one of those Christmas plants you see sold around this time of year. Well, it outgrew the house so it too gets to overwinter in the garage. My Christmas trees for the last several winters have been Ficus trees (either the benjamina or a banyan).

that photo of the Araucaria is of A columnaris, not heterophylla (a common error). I would gues 90-95% of all norfolk islands pines sold in nurseries are actually A columnaris, not heterophylla, which looks identical as a sapling... but very different as an adult. A heterophylla is a much larger, thicker and more upright tree (though in Hawaii the A columnaris get enormous, too). A columnaris are almost always leaning, at least initially, have close-together branches and tend to be, outside the tropics, smaller in stature, eventually forming a somewhat columnar shape as the lower branches break off. A heterophylla, on the other hand, keeps its nearly perfect triangular shape, has branches very widely set apart, and is almost always perfectly straight up and down. Here in California the two look very different once they get some height on them.
