What do impatiens winter growers use to control pests? Maybe like spider mites and aphids. I can see that the pests are taking their tole again this fall, already. Not too bad yet but starting, mostly in my Poor Man's Orchids. I am trying to stay with the natural homemade pesticides this year. So far have only rinsed them in a hot pepper, garlic mix.

I have heard not to use neem oil on impatiens. I am not using my All Seasons Horticultural & Dormant Spray Oil which has petroleum listed on the label because I thought it might have a bad effect. Would you say that a vegetable oil based spray using cooking oil would have the same bad effect on the impatiens as the neem oil? What is in in neem that is bad for impatiens?

Thanks for any suggestions for impatiens pesticides.

Apparently some people have experienced problems with some house plants after spraying with Neem Oil products (the dose, maybe?) while others have not had any problem. Any oil product that could keep the plants leaves from doing what leaves do, photosynthesizing, will cause problems.
I would start pest control, if needed, with a sharp spray of water as needed, followed by an Insecticidal Soap if that does not help. Starting with a very potent poison leaves you with little else to try.

I am very pleased with a mixture of joy, neem and water. My mix is 25 drops lemon scented joy/1 tsp green light 70% neem and the rest water in a 24oz spray bottle. I spray once every 5-7 days. No sign of bugs and my Alocasias were infested with spidermites around 3 weeks ago when I brought them in. I've used the same neem and rotated it with joy for the past 2 years on my impatiens and never had a problem. Frost got them this year but I still have some seeds;)

"Would this work for used motor oil as well?" Eh, probably not. Motor oil is made up of hydrocarbons, which aren't as readily broken down as the lipids in vegetable oil. There just aren't that many microorganisms out there that have the necessary enzymes to break down hydrocarbons, which is why they're pollutants and lipids are not. It could also be that they're just harder (slower, more energy expensive) to break down even with the appropriate enzymes, but that's beyond my knowledge. Will you be using this "pot" only for bread making? If so I really wouldn't worry too much about it's appearance...just clean it the best you can and consider it "seasoned"...HA! Then continue using it for just your bread. If it's terribly important that it's spotless, try putting water in it and putting it on the base and turn it on and let it go overnight and see if that loosens it all up. Maybe if you do end up getting it good and clean, you may consider finding a "crock pot" at a thrift shop for a couple bucks...I always see the loose pots(crocks) for a couple bucks at thrift shops minus the electric part. I never thought of using them for bread making...now I need one! HAHAHA!

What is the diameter of the containers you use? If they are very wide-mouthed, you may need to use 2 wicks per candle.

You could use any type of fat to fry in. It mostly depends on whether you want to impart a flavor from the fat you use (and lard DOES have it's own unique flavor) while vegetable oil is a neutral taste. You may also want to consider smoke point of the fat you are using based on how high the frying temperature will be. Joy is a detergent that is known to do harm to plants if not used with care. Adding something like that to a Neem Oil product is not necessary, anyway

Pests Controlled: Aphids, lace bugs, leafhoppers, plant bugs, mealybugs, mites, scales, thrips, whiteflies
Safe plants: Flowers and bedding plants
Sensitive plants:Do not use on azaleas, begonias, bleeding heart, camellias, crown of thorns, fuchias, gardenia, impatients, jade plants, lantana, lillies, palms, or sweet peas. Do not use on transplants or root cuttings. Test on euphorbias, chrysanthemums, dracaena, dieffenbachia, ivies, palms and succulents before using.

A similar listing of sensitive plants is NOT included with the Neem description. Vegetable oil of course isn't there.
