My Honeymoon Plumeria (pic)

Yayyy! I didn't kill my marriage! :)

I got married in November 2005 and while on my honeymoon in Hawaii, bought a 6" packaged cutting from a gift shop.

It grew 6 inches but didn't flower in 2006 and I was a little disappointed but most people said it wouldn't because it needed time to establish. Since it's kind of a memento of our honeymoon in Hawaii, I've been working really hard to get it to grow and flower this year and .... I did it! Its grown another 8 inches this year already and the first flowers bloomed last week.

Excuse the sunburn on the leaves, I learned that anything hotter than 102-104 degrees will burn my plumeria. I keep it on an east patio and it gets shaded after 12pm. On cooler days, I pull it out to get more sun. It's been 115 degrees often this summer and my plumie still survives as long as its not in direct sun.

My only problem is now I want another one - A PINK one! :D

Very nice flowers. I had a few burnt leaves when the temperature in my area got to 110 degrees. One thing I learned this year from mystwitch is that Epsom salt supplementation will provide protection from leaf scorching. I havenÂt had any further scorch problems after watering my plants with Epsom solution. There are many beautiful pink plumeria varieties. Why settle for just one?

Thank you. I actually also have a heated blanket on low surrounding them that I forgot to mention (you can kind of see it in the picture), but I've only had it under the pots since after I found the rot and did a little research online. It hasn't been there for long and I haven't seen any effects from it yet. I tried poking the withered looking cutting with a pin and it oozed a white milky liquid - is that the latex you mentioned? If that shows up, it means the cutting is save-able? Thanks for replies, I'm fairly new to this and I realize its a little off season for plumeria questions. I was successful 2 years ago in getting my first cutting started but these mail order ones have been much tougher than the one I brought back from my honeymoon in Hawaii :) Misty

Congratulations Bramasole, The little black things by the leaves are old leaves that did not mature or fall off when the plant went into dormancy last winter. You can just flick them off. They are normal. The round spot between the three branches is where an inflo was. Usually, when you get an inflo (an inflo is the flower stem) the branch will divide into two or three more branches at that spot. The inflo later falls off and leaves that round mark. This is normal also. There are some cosmetic marks on the stem, but they will probably be ok. A lot of mine have some cosmetic characteristics too. The only thing that I would do differently if it was me is... your 8th picture indicates that you have planted your plumeria with the main branch going sideways. If your plant is not already rooted, I would cut off that very bottom stub with the black hole in it. Then let the cutting dry for two weeks and replant it straight up. Otherwise it will always grow sideways, and the black hole kind of concerns me. There are many experts here. They can give you some excellent advise. Brighty

Hooray Minderella. Might I suggest spraying down the brown remnants of the seed and try removing it carefully. I've had some of my seeds start growing and not able to dislodge from the covering. My leaves ended up struggling to get free until I peeled them apart. Great job on the seedlings. Now comes the wait. Big Wave Dave

Hi there, Thank you so much for all the kind replies to my pics. You have to know I'm more than happy sharing my experiences and pics. with all you Plumeria growers out there as I swallow yours too and must say this forum is great. Gill you are so cool, hehe I did not know St. Michael had a Mountain in the UK too!! In fact I didn't even know about that one in France if it haven't just poped up out there in the water as I drowe by the flat landscape. Cornwall and Normandy are so very close so why not have two equal "Monts" hehe they might be able to look at oneanother in clear weater. I have to go see the one in Cornwall too. I love weird buildings and I live in a city that is 1270 years old and we have tons of old weird stuff too. I just can't figure out why this St. Michel/Michael wanted to be isolated out there in the water I would rather stay inland and feel more safe there. I'm glad you are happy with what I sent you and I look forward to hear about the germination rate of the Plumeria seeds. As I tried 30 seeds in my rose garden in May and 28 plants came out of there and they are really strong and healthy. The Stretlizia seeds however takes forever to germinate but Im shure you will be successfull with them too. Happy growing. Soren

Congrats on the flowers, they are beautiful and smell SOOOO good! You should soon be seeing at least one new branch as well. Philip gave great advice about the epsom salt...definitely helps if not completely eliminates leaf burn.

The flowers smell heavenly! I have to restrain myself from picking them and wearing them around behind my ear :D

I dont know what variety it is, threw the packaging away long ago. I wish I would have kept it now.

It did drop its leaves last winter and I panicked thinking it was dying until I edumacated myself on the plumeria.

Some suggested using water with epsom salt to help prevent sunburn. We have quite alkaline SALTY tap water here and I've heard, but don't know if its true or not, that you shouldn't supplement with epsom salts if you already have salty water - its like a double dose. Anyone know for sure? Maybe I'll try a LITTLE and see if the plant gets better or worse.

Right now I water it twice a month with a weak solution of 12-55-something (10 maybe), and water it with plain water the rest of the time. Its almost like a cactus - it doesnt wilt or dry out very bad!
