Garden Catalogs Arriving Earlier Than Usual

Every year it seems the spring garden catalogs (or, at least, some of them) arrive a little earlier than the year before. I am getting one or two of them a week.

It wasn't all that long ago that they all seemed to arrive in large numbers the week after Christmas. The latest arrivals are from Nichols and Pine Tree.

I'm not complaining.....but hope I don't misplace the 2009 garden catalogs during the holiday frenzy. LOL

I haven't received the big glossy ones yet, (except the two from HPS) like Burpee and Park that make me drool. (It is hard to resist their seeds because everything in those two looks lovely and sounds amazing, but I try to keep the spending to a minimum.)

I'm not complaining either. I love the seed catalogs and could look through them endlessly if I had the time. Usually, though, I order online nowadays even if I have found the seeds I want in the pages of a catalog.

I am going to assume that the earlier arrivals of the garden catalogs signals an effort by the seed companies to drum up more business in these tough times.

Good morning Dawn

I have managed to escape most catalog companies, due to my many moves the last ten years.

Now a days I buy my seeds locally, with some in bulk at a feed store, when I can find them after I move. :)

It's cold and windy out right now, and of course, still dark. Have lots to do, and got up early to get some puter time ahead of the rush.

I love the garden catalogs....I can sit and look at them endlessly as the guys are watching football, for example, on a cold Sunday afternoon. Still, even after looking at the paper copies, I'll go and order online because it is faster. We do not have a lot of seed sources here in southern OK--mostly just Wal-Mart and Lowe's in Ardmore, and Home Depot in Gainesville, Texas. The farm and ranch stores don't offer much of a selection, and even less the last couple of years. I miss the places in Fort Worth that had a gazillion kinds of seeds, especially the ones with bulk seed in big cans that you scooped out and bought by the ounce.

When we returned from doing a little Christmas shopping earlier today, I picked up the mail and noticed two new catalogs today: one from Vermont Bean Seed Co. and one from Totally Tomatoes. Both are owned by the same parent company, and it also owns HPS (two catalogs from them in the last 4 months) and Shumway Seeds (no cat. yet).

If the grassfires or wildfires don't start up on this "Extreme to Very High Fire Danger" day, I hope to finish a fencing project in the next couple of hours, and maybe then I can squeeze in time to scan through the pages of these two catalogs to see "what's new".

Well, my late lunch is over and I need to get back outside.

People here are receiving seeds and starting them already, and i've just made an order! Mostly, i've waited because i'd be too tempted to start things earlier if i got them earlier, and i wanted to start things like petunias and impatiens a little later than last year. loodean, That's the problem everywhere - the CSA I work at is having serious trouble with their carrots, beets etc and the radishes are ALREADY done! We had two weeks worth when we normally get 4-5. The heat and dryness aren't allowing them to germinate properly and when they do, it's slow growing. The snap peas are in bad shape, lots of pods - but no rain so they are mostly empty. They are in Osceola and seem to have gotten even less rain than we have here in northern St. Paul. -Marie
