?? cause of pattern on leaves

I posted this on the tree forum, but have not had answer:

I just picked up a weeping yoshino cherry tree ~ 7 feet in height. Once I got it home, I noted a number of leaves had a yellow mid leaf lightening bolt pattern. It is present only on some leaves, but fairly widespread. I also noted these same leaves were smaller than others, and tended to curl. A few branches have normal sized leaves. There is no evidence of other disease, and the tree appears vigorous with next years buds forming.None of the leaves are brown or have holes eaten in them. The nursery said it was a leaf miner.Is this is some type of virus? If it is a virus, what effect does that have on the tree long term? I know this variety is not known for longevity.

Leaf miners are grubs that bore through leaves. It always helps to do a search before you post especially if you already have a name.

Winter has been starting a little later and lasting a little longer here the last few years. In years past nearly all my trees had broken dormancy by Feb 15th. The past few years my trees have not been breaking dormancy until the first or second week of March. At this point roughly one third of my trees are just starting bud break. My best guess is that some trees will not break dormancy until the end of the month which is really late here. This was another cold winter by Arizona standards with many days 15-25 degrees below normal. Even so I expect to hear that this was one of our hottest winters on record. We heard last year that last summer was the South Wests hotted summer on record. In the fine print the South West had been re-done leaving out California and that day time temps were not included and that they shifted the summer season by three weeks. Anything that needs to be done to get a headline of "The Hottest" or "One of the Hottest" is all that matters to those who produce the data. If there is a way to say it was hot they will no matter how they have to twist and shift the statistics.

What causes yellow veins in the leaves?

To start I believe those leaves are a little sunburned causing the yellow tint and even the burnt tips. So, that is no worry, and for the yellow veins I would maybe pick up some blood meal from Walmart if you're that worried, blood meal helps with nitrogen deficiency. A but oregon deficiency causes yellowing leaves, so maybe look it up and see if it matches. Otherwise, I don't think you're plants are looking bad at all, but, if you're worried, $6 on blood meal would help a little.

This year is very similar to last year in terms of there being an abnormally warm October. When we have seasons like this, Fall foliage is not ideal. I am also in NJ (Zone 7) and am currently in peak color (went driving today just to see it in fact), but the colors have not been as stunning as in "normal" years. What I noticed last year too, was the leaves lingered on the trees even after they were nipped by frost. In my area, we have only had a very light frost so far (and many of my tropicals are still outside in fact). A harder frost should cover most areas in several days. And not sure if it's related to Fall color, but it's also been a very, very WET Fall.

Cause of yellow fig leaves? Peach leaves also. Zone 9b.

If the problem with the fig and peach trees are related, it could be a soil chemistry issue.

I took a few leaves to my extension agent, and they confirmed its a mosaic virus. If you split the leave along the pattern, it is not chewed from the inside like a borer would. It is similar to the same virus that infects roses. It is transmitted by the graft. It is not transmitted by bugs or pruning instruments. Effect on the tree is variable- anywhere from some different colored leaves to weakening of the tree.
