Some times you just gotta do it-how I was going to cover this thing has been bothering

me and that puts the other stuff in jeopardy- like the Trichocereus which will need a little extra love-

Anyway,here the removal and in my opinion...an up grade worthy of covering if it ever gets as big as the Y.Aloifolia....

Well...what do you guys think do you like it better or worse?

I know the other Yuccas looked pretty much perfect

but just to big a monster in there!

Murderer! I didn't realize you have a trachy back there. Are you going to root them in pots inside for the winter? I think they'll be easy enough without being under the "tent". They should be hardy enough temp-wise (unless you get negative double digits), and protecting from moisture should be easy enough.

I really am trying to keep it balanced and not have plants blocking the view of other plants.
So,yea...how about that-there is a palm back there!

They will go to the basement in small pots,hopefully some roots going over the winter...I can cover my cactus now in a blink.....ahhh,much better!

ya some in the future!!!first off looks like it hardpaned where its a dense hard clay like soil. you probly need to air rate then make a seed sand & soil mix heavy on sand it lets the grass breath. and water. keep people off. use a grass suitable for your climate. i live in alaska and have worked on a golf course for 10 years we use cold weather grasses(creeping red fescue,some rye(pinstripe), and nugget kentucky blue grass)air rate(poking holes in the soil), and and top dress with a seed sand mix filling holes plenty of water(dont let water pool washes seed out) and with time you will have the lawn you want. be patient

Christine, you are brilliant. I'll do the same this year, must make my life easier. I haven't posted anything because I had elective surgery so my face would match my garden (better looking)? I haven't posted anything because I have tried to catch up with work after 2 weeks at home. My back is better, we are not moving, EVER! So I could make my place available again for the spring swap. We did sell the meadow, but not the space around the barn nor the house or garden -- so we do have space for cars. If anyone wants more shade I can't help much -- but we could make the whole inside of the house available for eating, MAIN FLOOR AND APARTMENT, for people and children(not plants or dogs). How are you anyway?

I had lights put in cach closet so they come on when the door is opened and off when closed. I love this feature; no more hunting in a dark closet. Used T5 slim flourescest light fixtures. I also have drawers on all the bottom kitchen cabinets. Makes those dark recesses in the back go away. Did in floor hot water heat which I love. No more drafty forced air. Put a shower valve that controls a hose spigot inside the garage so we can wash the car on the outside concrete pad in the winter. Full extension glides on the kitchen drawers and the soft close on the drawers and the cabinet doors. We are at 5000 ft in northern Wyoming so we did tripple pane casement windows and 2x6 walls with foam insulation on the exteriior wall. I would do double hung windows if I had to do it again becasue the flies like to roost between the inside screen and the window pane. Have at least R50 in the ceiling that's blown in fiberglass. The new stuff that doesn't itch. I also agree with putting plenty of outside spigots and outside electrical plugs. Wish I had more.

Jim....question for you. I'm in Iowa City and really curious to know more about how you over winter your Musa Basjoo. Mine grew like crazy this year even after I did basically nothing to protect them last year.

I can't believe this winter will be as mild as last year so really curious as to what success you've had. Thanks buddy!

To bad I cut so many leaves of that Trachy,it wasn't ready for the main stage yet!

So yea,when I was a little kid 35 years ago 0: I brought
one of these back from Alabama and rooted it in the ground in St.Louis...it died.

They really will root just sticking them in the ground,the second year I had this it snapped in the wind,the tallest
one is the part I stuck in the ground and the 2 smaller shoots were off the trunk...pretty easy to root.

Next year they will be easier to cover(not being in another bed)and I will only cover them for the worst weather....
what I am always shooting for is maximum time for plants to be uncovered over winter,within reason.

No snow here or haze for that matter,sometimes they do get the temp right!

Sorry I missed your question......I have done nothing to my Basjoos that last 2 years but I think you could
get away with a little moisture cover and a big pile of leaves..

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll give it a whirl and see how things shake out in the spring. This past year I did absolutely nothing, no leaves, no moisture barrier, nothing.
