I got tired of growing pumpkins and squash that were always killed by the dreaded SVB. I found an article in Mother Earth News that explained all about the moth that lays the egg that grows into the SVB..anyway if you grow Cucurbita moshata..a type of squash that has dense solid stems they are totally immune to SVB damage. I grew a Rumbo pumpkin that was wonderful. It is actually a cross between a winter squash and pumpkin. If you read the seed catalogs that give the real botanical names you can find other types as well. The Rumbo's were delicious and beautiful too. The only thing is that you can't carve them like a jack o lantern because they are dense. I got my original seeds from Jungs but Parks used to carry them too. Are we talking about cucumber beetles (size of ladybugs but yellow and black) or squash bugs (about 1/4 inch long and charcoal grey)? Big difference. I deal with cuke beetles by growing only 'County Fair', the only cuke resistant to the wilt carried by the beetle. I deal with squash bugs (which I have never seen on cucumbers) by growing only one or two plants of squash (zucchini), trapping them under boards and patrolling twice a week, checking all leaves and removing the orange eggs. This is nearly impossible to do for winter squash as there are just too many leaves, so I've given up growing them.

Note * Those were 4' long trombetta Squash. Worth fighting for.I do need to clean up. The deer ate the leaves near where I am standing. I use cardboard to keep the grass down. I think I am going to burn it so they do not have a place to hide. I was getting ready to plant some winter squash. Now I am frightened to cut it down and get rid of it. I ma thinking I need to keep it as a trap.. My Vietnamese cucumber is making 2' long cucumbers and really taking off on thew other side of the garden.I fear that If I cut this down all these bugs will go over there. AHH, the ol garden dilemmas. Well if it is a "trap" it needs to be a smaller trap. In her glory days My haul What she looks like now. SIGH
