What would cause sweet peppers to rot ON the vine??

Weird thing I've never seen before. My peppers look like they are getting rotten spots before they've been picked. Or could they be burns? I don't know what would be causing this. It's only on one plant so far. Any ideas?

Sunscald, Damage from extra bright sunlight directly on the walls. A reason to make certain you have good leafy cover.

If the damage is relatively minor -- that tis, doesn't penetrate deeply into the wall -- the damaged area may dry and not extend into the rest of the pepper.

If the damage extends through the wall, or nearly so, the softened tissue is an easy place for secondary rot organisms to enter.

which means.. why this one plant????

what can you define.. in its specific placement.. that these would burn???

is there a wall ... a sidewalk... etc .. perhaps a pic of the area.. and we can SEE what is going on ....

and yes.. i know she what she meant ... but i changed the subject

I have the same exact type spot on a few of my bell peppers. The spots are not on the blossom ends either, but on the sides. Could it be that a bug chewed at those parts and as the fruits developed the spot became rotten? I noticed that my latest peppers, the ones that formed in the last couple weeks, have not had such spots. Maybe those type bugs went away? Just a guess? It looks like I'm going to have a lot of peppers from now until mid-Fall. My plants are starting to really produce. They are about three feet tall and even starting to lean over. I grew peppers for the first time last year and the plants didn't really pump out the peppers until late summer and early fall. At least something grows well in Texas. Pete

I should check some past notes but I remember picking most of my blushing beauty peppers with a "Blush" of orange color on the cream, sometimes with a early purple haze, fruit. I thought the final color was more like a rust orange than red if allowed to go the distance. The problems you experience in allowing a pepper to fully ripen are not abnormal. Many things can go wrong in the final weeks leading to a ripe fruit. But ripe peppers are almost always sweeter (even the hot ones) and nutrients like vitamin C are much higher if ripened. I think that the end use mostly determines when you would pick the peppers. Even sweet and hot banana peppers will turn orangey-red when fully ripe but most people prefer the banana yellow color. Cherry peppers picked green just aren't cherry peppers. Just like Bulgarian carrot peppers are best picked when orange (like a carrot). I've sold all types of peppers at all stages. Ohiojay mentioned picking cayennes at both stages but in my market people of Middle East heritage prefer all green cayennes. Otherwise I would normally sell them as mixed. I used to string them and the mixed colors looked most attractive. For a fully ripe bell, whether Yellow, Orange or Red, I charge more because of the extra risk and time. Also keep in mind that any pepper remaining on the plant continues to drain nutrients from that plant. If you pick all of the green peppers from any plant that plant will send out many more blossoms and produce another crop much sooner.

Sweet potato crown/root rot?

All my mother plants were dug up 5 weeks ago with good results so I dug up 1 row of 2ndary sweets today to see up what's up. No crown rot here. The one row I dug produced 50% nice med bakers and the rest were smallish to lunker in makeup which will be in casseroles. . They might have produced more bakers if left in the ground another 10 days but with heavy rains from "Michael" expected on Thursday I felt the urge to see if they're ready. Several inches of rain is too much at this stage but the remaining 4 rows will have to wait. No frost in sight, been warm, but cooler temps are ahead.

Thank you both.

After looking into sunscald, that is exactly what it looks like. This is an 8 x 8 raised bed on the side of my yard, but nothing reflecting on it. I think the reason that it happened on this one plant is because these two popped up at the very top of the plant, which has less leaf cover than the lower sections.

The scalded areas aren't (yet) too extensive, but I went ahead and cut these two, cut them open, discarded the bad parts. Everything inside looks and smells good.

Thanks for your help! Glad to know it's not a fungus or blossom end rot (which is what I was dreading).

no window on the house reflecting sun???

you are giving up rather easily.. Sherlock holmes you arent.. lol ...

maybe this is what happens in z9 ... but in my world.. plain old sunshine is not a reason ... unless they simply dont grow peppers that far south ... are you really pushing the southern boundaries of the pepper plant?????

not to mention.. the sun has been declining for months.. who would expect it in mid September..

but again.. i grow MI ... so what do i know...

i presumed as much ...

but i am a fan of mysteries... hence the SHolmes reference ....

i like to spend my time in the garden.. figuring things out ...

but sometimes... the simplest answer is the only answer ...
