Anybody else get too much rain?

I was delighted to get 1&1/2" of rain last Wed as it was starting to get dryish--not dry because we got 10" of rain in August. But then it rained again on Thurs 8/10ths and drizzled Friday morn. I didn't check the gauge then, but we probably didn't get more than a couple tenths. It was too wet to cultivate with the minitiller, so I spent the day transplanting fall stuff--broc, chinese cab, br. sprouts and some mixed greens, and planted radishes. And felt good about it. Then this morning early it started raining again and rained Very HARD.

When I went out to look at my transplants, which were still quite small some of them were pounded into the mud. The majority will recover I think but they sure didn't need another THREE inches of rain.

George, I sure hope you got a good rain, because when I saw your garden last Mon I could tell you hadn't had as much rain as I had.

And Dawn, did you get any?

I sure wish I had a large cistern to save some of this when we get too much. My father has a water tower/tank that he bought from a resort going out of business. He drilled a second well as the house well didn't provide enough for the garden and put a pump on a timer, then a timer on the gravity flow faucet. He gets less rain usually than I do for being only 15 miles east of me, but this summer he has not had to use much well water either.

I bet you are delighted that the rain continues to fall, even though it is a bit much rain for new transplants.

The quick answer, is "No, we are not getting too much rain here."

The last time we had too much rain here in Marietta was when 12.4" fell on April 29.

Our rainfall for September at our house so far is about 2/10s of an inch, and we had an inch of rain in August.

On paper, we look "great" because of that April rainfall, but the last six weeks or so have been very, very dry.

We had a 50% chance of rain for today and were supposed to get up to about 85-87 degrees. There has been no rain, and the thermometer on our porch topped out at 94 degrees. I think they sent us the wrong weather. : )

On the way home from Ft. Smith last evening we got into heavy rain about 30 miles from here over in Ar. We were relieved to see that it hadn't rained here when we got home. But then about 6:30 am it started raining hard again and rained 7/10ths. We are really WET. Sure wish we could send some to those of you who still need it.

We ended up with 2.75 inches! My MIL is sw Springfield got 3.5 inches. I pulled the rest of onions; they had soggy tops. We laid them out on the flat bed of the trailer and I hope they dry out quickly and don't rot. They were some of the nicest I have raised. I also picked a small tub of tomatoes....two were already rotten. I hadn't been in the garden for three days because our granddaughter and her friend's visit.

Thank you Skybird for the encouragement and kind words. I took your advice as the sky is looking quite dark and suspicious in this cooler weather so I dragged out the other plastic lawn chairs to tent over all that I could. And you're right the rain was the best part. We have had several good rains in the past few weeks. I put out some large buckets to catch the rain and they were filled to the brim. Trees look happy and the lawn which I refuse to water more than once a week is looking like it may come back to life. Steve, I checked out Ben's link you attached and I did not get it as bad as he did. Poor guy. We work so hard and then to have that happen is a bummer. Great life lessons in patience I say (whether we like it or not). Charlene

it might be sun scorch. If it rained and then got sunny the leaves on top may have been burned? Its hard to say without a picture. I probably would just get rid of those dead leaves. If u tug them a little and they seem to be ready to come off I would just get rid of them.

thanks jack, I plan on aerating this fall and de-thatching to remove any dead brown material next spring. The lawn is very thick and weed free. Even though most of the dollar spot is in a full sun area; the large amount of rain we received this spring and some poor judgment on my part with over watering (never had an irrigation system before) provide a rich environment for the dollar spot. I am hoping changes to my lawn care system will alleviate the problem next spring. I am trying to understand the proper timing to water. i.e. when the grass appearance indicates it needs water, screw driver insertion test etc. I also plan on completing a soil betterment program this growing season that Morph had suggested based on a Logan Lab's Soil Test result. Along with supplementing the program with Milorganite in early September.

Aaacck! I cannot believe it rained again. I hope "really WET" doesn't translate into 'too wet' for the fall garden to do well.

A thunderstorm formed just northwest of us yesterday, stayed north of us and traveled into Texas south of us. We had the clouds, the thunder, a brief cooling off of a couple of degrees from the winds.....but no rain.

If we don't get good rain here in September, then often we'll have a pretty dry Sept-Oct and not start getting good rain until Nov-Dec. I hope this is not one of 'those' years.
