holes in lawn

I have noticed many small holes in my yard, these are not moles or yellow jackets but I don't know what is causing them. There are several areas with as many as 20 -30 holes in a group. No dirt is piled up around them or near them. They appear to be deep, I haved poured gallon jug of water into hole and it runs quickly into the holes! Does anyone have an idea? I might add it has been extremely hot and dry here in our area for weeks.

I've been hearing cicadas in my neck of the woods in recent days. Sounds like the holes made by emerging cicada nymphs. Their tunnels can be very deep.

Several kinds of solitary bees and wasps make 'single unit' nests in the ground. Have you observed any such activity? You made no mention of little burrows in your yard, so I'll guess that it's not mole crickets.

It appears right after I cut the grass. I do not really see any ants. The holes are the size of 3mm or so.

We have small holes in the lawn, 1" around and 6" deep, no critter is present, the holse are starting to get bothersome. Any ideas what they are?

Rather hard to see but if there is a mound around the hole made up of small balls then they were made by land crayfish. They live in moist/wet soil. They feed on soil invertebrates. In MI we would find them after long heavy rains. Not a problem.

Yes, at least the people in Alabama and Philadelphia can eliminate one cause of holes dug in their lawns; bandicoots. For want of a detailed description, bandicoots are like little kangaroos that scratch around at night looking for grubs, roots, etc. When you sit out at night they will hop silently around your feet but if you make a sudden move they will spring away at lightning speed. Back to the holes, I have seen similar sized holes, about 25mm (an inch for those who haven't caught up with metrics) (cheeky!!) and they are usually spider holes, but can also be dug by wasps, beetles and probably a lot of other insects. Whatever they are, I hope you leave them to "do their thing" Petelong.
