please help me with palmetto scale

My cabbage palms have finally taken off (as much as they can) in the past two weeks. They're pushing new spears up and doing really well. At about the same time they started taking off I noticed that white powdery scale. I've treated with systemic granuals and an oil insect spray. It seems like I'm seeing more and more of the white stuff. through all of this they continue to push up new growth. When I have to move my stuff back in I don't want this crap spreading.

Is this white powdery substance sticky ?
If not it's probaly a fungus.

I guess it could be. I described it in an earlier post and someone from Florida told me it was palmetto scale. I'll give it some kind od fungicide just in case. It is not really sticky to the touch but it comes off when I scrape it. I don't know if a funguss would "flake" off like that.

@meyermike Since I was not sure about the mite damage, I went to buy the pesticide for it and used it, but nothing has improved so far. It's been several weeks... @Tapla Yes, I usually measure the pH using the pH indicator from my lab. I always make sure it's around 5. I use the same fertilizer as the one I use for my Hydrangea. @meyermike Hah! So it might not be about the mites outside but inside the soil??? I didn't know there is no such thing? My gardenia's soil has never had the chance to hold water for too long though, because of the big hole underneath the pot everything went out. It took less than a week for the soil to be dry again. Now spring has arrived it is growing so many new leaves and flowers all over the place it becomes very hard for me to check everything. If I want to change the soil I should change it now right? Will it solve anything? If there are mites leaving on the roots, changing soil won't remove them right? I just notice something but the leaves of my gardenia never falls, like never ever. The oldest leaves look the worse. With all those yellow spot as shown in the picture. Please help. :

I can help you out. First forget Shadow Turf. I do not have any personal experience with it, but I do know a few who do and are sorry they ever installed it and has been replaced. Unless things have changed in the last two years since I last checked, Shadow turf is only available as plugs, and a 72 plug flat cost about $90 plus shipping and will only cover roughly 60/ft2 on 6-inch centers which take a season or two to fill in. You can buy a 500/ft2 pallet of Bermuda sod for $90. As for Celebration or TifGrand, not sure you can even find any in DFW area as I think the farms for it are in Houston area. However If the shade is as deep as you say, I doubt they would work. I know the promoters say they will grow in 50% shade, independent research only confirms it doe moderately well in 30% shade, and fails @ 50%. That is only slightly better than standard hybrid cultivars. For you I think Saint Augustine is your only real option. Of the types available in the DFW area with highest shade tolerance and reasonable cold tolerance are: Palmetto Del Mar Bitter Blue Seville Saphire

The product you looked at is Organocide. I've heard, too, that it is pretty stinky. But so is Neem oil, when used inside. No, you cannot make a mixture of culinary sesame oil and water and use it on your plants. ESPECIALLY at the rate you've proposed. Products that have oils of some kind in them are packed full of emulsifiers and very LITTLE oil. And do you know how strong the odor of sesame oil is? I keep some handy at all times for the sushi rolls (for the rice) I make, and it even smells through the container. Your helpful guy was also wrong about the ingredients in Ivory being the same as what is in a commercial insecticidal soap. Ivory dish 'soap' is not a soap at all, but a detergent. Much more capable of damaging your plants and less effective on the pests. For something that is the safest for your plants, safe to use around you and your pets, and most efficient at controlling the pests, I strongly urge you to spring for the commercial insecticidal soap. Perfectly safe to use on your herbs, too. But you know what? You should have the pests identified first of all. You'll not likely find a knowledgeable professional at Home Depot. Try your local extension office, or a garden center staffed with a horticulturist. A decent garden center will have Neem oil, by the way. John, the pesticide mentioned in that very good informational site is Confidor, the brand name one of the many insecticides with Imidicloprid as the active ingredient. It is used as a soil drench because it is systemic. It's much more efficient to have a plant absorb this particular chemical into its system to control pests than to spray over the top. Imidicloprid can be found in a host of pesticides for the systemic control of aphids, mealybugs, whitefly, and scale. Its use, by the way, is well known to increase the population of spider mites and thrips. And before anyone asks...Imidicloprid is one of the very few systemics listed for use on edible crops, including citrus. It's not something that should be used unless you understand the timing of such applications so that the fruit or vegetable can be eaten safely. Again, systemics enter the system of plants, making the sap and other juices toxic to those that might ingest it. Wizzard, an untended scale infestation can kill plants. How quickly that can happen depends upon the species of scale, the species of plant, and the overall vigor of the plant. You chose the best option for your cotoneaster, a horticultural oil. A light spray can really help in getting these pests under control. Scale insects won't be completely killed with one application, but an occasional misting will do the trick. Horticultural oils are something that every plant grower should have on hand, including those who try to grow organically. With oils, it's important to avoid spraying in very warm or very cold temperatures. Gloxinia, horticultural oil is your best bet. Read and follow the directions. Also, I am curious about your kiwi. When kiwi are purchased from a bonafide nursery, it will be clearly labeled as a male OR a female plant. What was the name of the kiwi you purchased? They can be grown in a container for the first year (5 gallon) but won't take kindly to that for much longer than that, I don't think. Don't really know from first hand experience.

Could it be part of the plant. I know other palms have fur, brown stuff, white stuff etc that are part of the skin of the palm. It might not be anything to worry about.

I hear what you are saying but I think it is something else. I've looked at cabbage palms when I've been in Florida. I never say anything like this.

Andy i realy don't think what you have is scale..
Most palm tree scale is ooozy,drippy slimey not powdery ,
and if you tried to scrape it with your fingernail, if you could it would be like gum on the tip of your fingers..
I have never seen any scale that is powdery.
My suggestion is go to wal-mart and get some schultz 3 in 1 in the blue bottle it takes care of bugs,fungus, and a lot of other things palm trees can get.
Just my 2 cents lol :)

Andy, I have a needle palm that has what it sounds like you're describing. If I find out what it is, I'll let you know. I'm going to try spraying it down with a dishsoap/water mixture. I've been told it can be an effective remedy against fungi and diseases.

Thanx Shaun, actually with all of the rain the past few days it seems to be clearing up. After a few months of having these palms(there are two in one pot they were sold that way) my thought was "what a dud, now I know just how slow these suckers are" The past 10 days though with all of the heat and rain they have really spead up. The new spears are growing nicely. I'm now very exited about them and want them to stay healthy. I enjoy all of my palms but it's nice to have some good old american ones.

Not sure what it is, but I had similar stuff on a couple of small palmettos. I filled a spray bottle with water, added about 6 drops of dish detergent and sprayed. It really did the trick; at least the stuff never came back.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. it seems to have really cleared up. i think a combination of oil spray and TONS of rain did the trick.

Andy,

By the time one sees the scale, it has been in the spear(s) quite a while. You're not seeing it get worse, you're just seeing the leave grow out that were already infested.
