'ames' St. John's wort, blooms dud

My healthy and beautiful St. John's Wort 'Ames' went in the ground less than two months ago. It soon was covered in 100's of light green buds. I finally realized that they were simply not blooming properly, but opening a little and then stopping and now today noticed that some had black erosion spots on them. I immediately cut the bush back and got rid of all the bloom buds and sprayed the plant with a garden pest spray. I'm very disappointed that I didn't get the exotic yellow blooms, but more importantly, Is there anything I should know about pests and St. John's Wort for next season or what I should do right now about it?

How far did you cut them back? I really hope you just trimmed them. Either way its highly ill advised to cut them back this time of year...ecspecially when you just planted them.

I have ames as well. They were late to leaf out fro me this year. Looking good right now. Flowers don't pop for another 2-3 weeks yet. I'm in zone 5.

Lastly there aren't many best issues. If you do have any you should spray the plant right before bud break...or there are soild treatments that last up to 3 months.

I've had my 'Ames' Kalm St John's Wort for years and it is starting to be a little too woody in the interior with less foliage. Can I give this shrub a renewal pruning? If so, how far back can I cut it and at what time of year is best for doing this. I do not mind skipping flowers for a year or two.

It would help to know what type of St John's wort you have - there's many different species and hybrids - but now is not a good time to prune any of the shrubby forms.....unless you don't mind losing any more flowers for this season :-) There really isn't a step-by-step involved. Prune the entire plant back to a few inches from the ground each year in late winter or early spring. The groundcover form can be pruned back at any time and often is done multiple times a season to keep its aggressiveness in check and to remove rust damaged foliage, which is a huge problem in many areas.

I have never grown St. John's Wort and so can't give pruning advice, but as far as snow protection, I have made teepees out of 7-8 foot bamboo stakes and wrapped them securely with burlap for protection. Also making a 'sandwich board' with 2 pieces of wood and hinges will protect your plant from the weight of snow. The article below suggests the plant is short lived and that softwood cuttings should be taken in spring to start new plants. Also, it is cautioned to beware of dermatitis when touching this plant. Depending on the variety you have, SJW is not well suited for a container, as it will get 4 foot tall at bloom stage. I believe all SJW are perennials, and perennials do not usually bloom their first year so if you get a new plant in bloom from a nursery, it was probably forced bloom, and may take a year of two to naturize itself, to get its own internal clock ticking again. If you are planning on using these be sure to get a positve ID on on the Latin anme, not just common SJW. The medicinal kind is Hypericum perforatum, and here's a link for you to peruse. Enjoy! trim the height all over and cut 1/3 of the branches to the ground, ideally the oldest ones. It blooms on new wood which means you prune in the early spring before the blooms come out.
