mice help! at my wits end!! they are outsmarting me

I need some help. I lived in Las Vegas nearly all my life but this is the first time I have dealt with such an extreme problem. I live in the SW portion of Vegas and our community is bordered by the desert. I have a horrible problem with field mice. They have utterly destroyed everything from my tomatoes, melons, lettuce, greens squash, everything! I put out the spring board traps in both rat and mice size and they managed to eat the peanut butter right off the trap with out setting it off. So yesterday I went and put of both a hands free bait along with more spring board traps and glue traps (both sizes) (I know they are inhumane and if they worked I was planning on killing the mice humanely immediately so they don't suffer) but of course the managed to eat the bait off of it and just moved the glue traps to wherever they wanted. I even got this really heavy duty plastic spring trap that had an inserted cup for bait and gnarly teeth and they took that trap with them! I don't know what else to try. Theres one that will sit up on my wall and mock me while I set the traps! I am probably going to try the electronic one but didn't know if it is worth the $50. They aren't living in the garden (not that big of one) but there are tons of them visiting frequently. Thanks all!!

Can you reset the traps somehow? It sounds like they are too small to trip it. Havahart makes a tiny trap. When you trap them, you can drown them. Sad to have to kill anything, but I understand!

talk with your county extension and/or Ag office...

when i had them licking off PB .. i resorted to stripping the paper off a twist tie... filing down a peanut/almond ... and wiring it to the trap ... the filing to give the wire a way to grab it ...

you might also put the PB .. on the UNDERSIDE of the release ... and mush it into the crevice ... so they have to work a bit harder ... to get it all ...

it never fails to amaze me.. how they get it 99% clean.. and ... well you know the rest ....

also.. you need a time perspective ... if this takes all summer.. so be it ...

Decades ago, someone planted kudzu on our farm, and on thousands of other farms throughout the American South, to combat the erosion that had resulted from generations of improper farming practices. I'm not sure of the exact year kudzu was introduced, probably ca. 1900, or possibly earlier than that. I seem to recall reading that kudzu was a star attraction at the Great 1876 Centennial in Philadelphia. At any rate, we all know that vigorous Oriental vine has swept the South during the following century. The vigor of ivy and wisteria pale in comparison to the vigor of kudzu. We fight kudzu, Japanese honeysuckle, wisteria, and ivy on a yearly basis, but, simultaneously love, enjoy, and respect these exotic vines--akebia, or violet vine, too. Gardening is a never-ending struggle. There are successes; there are failures. _C'est la vie._ Over the years, I've made my peace with these and other vines. At present, I'm allowing kudzu to have its way with the plot of ground that includes our septic tank drainage field. It grows luxuriantly and forms undulating waves of lush, large-leaved greenery for months on end, with beautiful, fragrant wisteria-like racemes of purple blossoms in late summer. This sea of green provides an above-ground canopy for the groundhog, or woodchuck, colony that lives underground in a maze of tunnels. The groundhogs are kudzu connoisseurs (sp.?) who relish the leaves as a dietary staple. A bamboo grove provides a fine backdrop to the kudzu "lawn." No mowing required.

I have to agree - helping others should not come at such a cost to you and your well-being. For your own sanity, literally, you should talk to a therapist yourself who can explain what is going on, it is some sort of codependency thing when your dad defends your mother's reprehensible behaviour etc. Clearly something needs to be done, but you need to look after yourself. There is nothing wrong with approaching their doctor and discussing the situation with them, it happens all the time. I would say it's clear that your dad isn't coping and has some mental issues himself. My mum is herself very self-centred and somewhat verbally abusive of my dad, it took me a long time to see him through my own eyes and not hers, and work out he's a pretty cool guy. It was a shock to me to realise my first wife was very much like my mother, and my role very much like my dad's, although I didn't resign myself quite like he did, and eventually got out. I had to ask him one day why he put up with it, and he sheepishly replied since he'd put up with it for so long he couldn't do anything now. I know this sounds callous, but I sort of hope she'll pass first and he'll remain reasonably healthy so he can enjoy some of his time a little more, and maybe come and visit with us (overseas) a bit, she's been too unwell to travel for some time. I hope you can find the strength to do what needs to be done and distance yourself a little, if that's what it takes. Make sure your kids understand all this, again, talking to a therapist would help.

Drilling in Tile -- HELP, I'm at my wits end!

I'd never thought of pre-drilling a tile before installation, but that is a brilliant idea! I have some of those spade ceramic bits and what I have used them on, has been fine but I tend to break into a sweat before I even start drilling. At least starting out, I'd work slow, and agree don't use percussion! I had a glass shelf to install in my beautiful finished bathroom, I have to admit I put it off out of fear, now I'm divorced and it's my ex's bathroom, it's her problem! I am just doing up a small bathroom myself and will be using quite a lot of tile, I had assumed those bits of mine would be ok but might look out for the diamond sort, in case. Handy to have, anyway...but predrilling? Sounds like a great idea, and if you have a drill press, even better. I'd put rubber or something underneath...

Roxanna, for several years I overwintered about 200 pots each winter in an unheated garage. It can be done, and done successfully. If the plants are zone hardy, they should survive the winter in your garage. Make sure they are well watered, bring them in **after they are dormant**, and check them for moisture in January or February. Put them in a spot in the garage where the temps will remain constant (i.e. out of any sunlight that may come into the garage, etc.) It will help if the plants are in decent sized pots. I have overwintered things in small 2- to 3-inch pots, but of my losses over the years, it was usually the smaller pots. Since I had so many in the garage, what I would do for moisture in January or February is just shovel a few shovelfuls of snow over the pots, if there were snow on the ground at the time. Otherwise I would water maybe once, lightly. Honestly, after a few years I either got sick of dragging them all in or like you (and probably like a lot of us, lol!) I procrastinated, and the pots just lived outside. Even outside, most of the stuff survived. FYI, my garage is truly unheated. It is a free-standing garage, with not a bit of insulation - boards and wood shingles on the outside. It's cold and temps remains pretty constant. Good luck! :) Dee

Thanks all! No these are not small mice at all at least tip to tail at least 8 inches. My black spring trap came back 2 days later with a mouse attached. So we have gotten one so far. I'll try the paper trick. I have put only the slightest hint of peanut butter on the traps and done so on underneath and somehow they are still getting to it but maybe tie it to it will make them pull on the trap to set it off. Thanks once again for the ideas!
