Purple Coneflowers turning brown and dying

A couple days ago I noticed a couple leaves on one of my purple coneflowers turned completely brown. A couple days later nearly the whole plant had gone brown and seems dead. I removed the remains thinking it might be some sort of bacteria or fungal problem. Today I noticed another plant several feet away showing symptoms so I took a closer look. What appeared to be little black dots and yup, sure enough, it was poop of some very little, worms. They are blackish brown and maybe a quarter inch long. I've never seen this on coneflowers before. What is strange is they don't really seem to eat the leaf the way one expects with a worm but just seem to drain it or something as it is still there, just turns completely brown and quite dead. I've looked over the newly infected/infested plant to remove any leaves that seemed infected and removed them.

Any idea what this might be?
