8/21/2012 Oklahoma Drought Monitor

This week's Oklahoma Drought Monitor is linked below.

As you can see, a larger percentage of the state is now in the most serious kind of drought--Exceptional Drought (D-4), but in some areas there was modest improvement. The Exceptional Drought area enlarged substantially in northeastern OK where fire danger also remains incredibly high.

One tiny portion of the state (0.38%) improved enough to drop from Severe Drought (D-2) to Moderate Drought (D-1), and that is in an area that has had steady rain all along this summer and has been a category or two lower than most areas all along.

A portion of southeastern OK that had been in Extreme Drought (D-3) dropped one category to Severe Drought (D-2). Let's hope that is the beginning of a trend towards improvement that will continue and will spread as more rain falls.

This week's forecasted rains for some parts of the state will help the areas that receive rain, whether they receive enough rain to drop to a lower category or not.

I'll link the overall US Drought Monitor on its own thread.
