Hello Everyone,

Happy Forth of July!!! Thank you to all that make it possible to enjoy our cookouts here on our own soil!!!

To our Military...past present and future...Thank You for all of the sacrifics for our freedoms!!!

Just wanted to update some of the flowers palm blooming and some of the Hardy Hibiscus pics for Greg!!!

I second the thanks to our troops!! They are amazing men/women and have helped give us so many opportunities!

Your landscaping continues to be the envy of so many of us! I love your palms and the tropical feel it gives! Maybe we can exchange seeds :)

Happy 4th of july everyone! I give thanks to all the people who made our country the one it is today.
Your plants are beautiful! Sabals are looking good as always and the pindo is too! I really like the hibsicus. I used to have a very large one in yellow like yours (I think its called sunny wind, maybe its summer wind???) The pink hibsicus (painted lady) is looking very nice also! My "painted lady" Hibsiscus had its first blooms of the season today. For some reason it was (by far) the last of my hibiscus to have its first bloom of the season. I like the texas star hibiscus. I think thats my favorite of the cold hardy ones.
The plumerias are also looking really great. The flowers are beautiful! Mine are finally getting good leaves now and the divine is getting a huge head of flowers!
Your agave is getting huge! It would probably do fine in the ground during the winter but since you have had it for so long, I cant blame you for keeping it in a pot. I think its getting to its blooming stage too!

DLG, I buy lots of stuff from lots of places (plus I do a TON of plant swaps too). I buy a lot of semi-tropical bulbs from McClure and Zimmerman, plus Berridge Nursery too (they usually have nice fat Scillas). Hit Baker Nursery often too in Central Phoenix, and I am not above hitting Home Depot and Lowes too (I'm not above ANYTHING when it comes to gardening, except stealing). I order a lot of plants from Select Seeds (great website adn catalog), and I experiment a bit with Annie's Annuals. I order tons of seeds from Thompson and Morgan and from JL Hudson Seedsman (fun catalog, no pics), I like High Country Gardens too, and I'm an addict of Plant Delights Nursery too. I hit Orange County, CA and L.A. a lot too and get lots of goodies there (Roger's Gardens in Irvine, Mimmosa Nursery in Buena Park/Anaheim, CA Cactus Center, etc). Ebay.com often has interesting plants and seeds for sale too. I guess when it comes to plants I'm an omnivore, LOL. Take care all, Grant

What a beauty, asters have to be my favorite flower, At one time I had over 60 different cultivars but have yet to grow 'Bluebird'. I lost most of mine due to two extremely wet winters but I've started replacing the ones I've lost that is when I find them. Of course when I see new to me varieties they seem to follow me home. Mine are just about finished for this year but it was nice to finally see some honey bees working the flowers, it's the only time we see them nowadays, they must be from a hive that has been brought in for the winter. Great pictures, as always. I am glad you are still getting some blooms since we all enjoy seeing them. Did you get rain last week? It missed us but my husband said he got rained on in Nashville. Hello Everyone, Randy, Thank you...Im glad your seeds are doing well!!! So your Hibiscus is pretty tall eh? My friends still have comments everytime they come over, so its nice to see flowers on them during the summer so they finally believe me that they are not some other...aaa...weed!! LOL!!!! Brian, Thanks for the new email...so that's the problem!!! LOL...we need to catch up on some of those scores...LOL!!! Really, it would be nice to chat...ill email you soon. Im on the road right now and ill be home this weekend. So, Its alright to come and park in front of your house with all of the "HOKIE" stuff all over the truck/camper when we come up for the games? LOL...illl even put the banner on the back ladder of the camper just for you!!! LOL...that way all of your neighbors will think you have switched sides...LOL...(chuckling hard here!!!) How is everything in LYH? Cant wait to hear!!! Did i tell u that Chris Ta.... lives down the street from us. He was your star player this year. He and my son grew up together playing soccer at school..What a nice young man!! Vince, Those seeds will stay on the tree for you...i usually cut the seed pods down because after they flower and turn to seed, they look awful..but, ill leave them on for you!!! As for the Pindos during the winter. I believe the first year i did wrap the hearts with the heat tape and tucked them in with Burlap, like i did with all of the Sabals. I dont wrap any of themm anymore. Especially after the first few years. They have all adjusted to our winters, but when we do have a huge snow storm, i do go out and knock off the snow from the fronds. Some say to do this others say not to. I just hate to see all of that weight on the fronds...i do have a pic of my hubby doing this. When i get home and on my computer with my pics, ill post a pic of the Winter look! You will get a kick from this pic!!! The heat has been brutal..i feel for anyone who has to work out in this heat...stay cool!!! Just walking across the tarmac here in CLT was a blistering 118* today....thats with the heat index Yikes!!! Take care everyone...cant wait to get home and check on the progress of the new inflos on my Plumies... Hey Laura,Your yard looks like a garden paradise.I can tell you really like plumerias,How many diffrent types do you have?I know what you were talking about with the Texas Star Hibsicus.Mine are growing like crazy but they have'nt bloomed yet.My Father was a veteran of WW2 and the Korean war.If it wasent for the sacrifices they made we would'nt have the freedoms we do today.God bless all the men and women serving now.Hope everyone enjoys the Holiday weekend.

Alex...I love the different Hibiscus as well!!! Didn't know that names of the pink and yellow ones, so thank you for that!!! My Texas Stars have gone crazy this year..they really love the heat and like lots of water (which we really need). we haven't had any rain for 2 weeks now and it is starting to show. Hopefully we can get a break, but the forecast calls for more heat and sunshine!!! Sounds like you are going to have record heat up your way...stay cool!!! Thanks for the comments!!!

Hope all is well...Thank you for your Dad's service in WW2 and Korea. I love seeing all of the American flags flying this weekend...I wish that more would keep up this enthusiasm throughout the year...but I'm happy with what I see!!!
I have about 20+ different variety of Plumeria (yes... I am an addict!!!) Be careful.. once you have one, you will want more!!! They all go dormant in the winter, so they are very easy to care of. I just store them in a cool semi dark area and water maybe once a month.

No they haven't grown that much -thanks(-;

It cooled of a little for a few days(cooler nights really)
the rain is back and the tropical feel.

Laura: Is that a large agave americana I see in a couple of shots? I love those. I have been trying to find a good size one to buy without any luck. Any advise?
Your yard looks great. Big trunking palms are just a dream for some of us...

Hi Laura,

Lookin' tropical.

Blooming Sabals surely says they are at home and conditionas are good. Its a good time for them to bloom and they will have all summer. When I saw them bloom in Orlando I noticed bees and all sorts of insects on the white flowers. Do the bees in VB pollenate them too?

PS. Wow your patch of habiscus is huge and in full bloom must be spectacular.

Ahhhh... FLORIDA NORTH! I love it! Maybe SE Virginia should be renamed Floriginia! LOL!

I can never get enough of the pics of your FANTASTIC yard!!!! It really is like a piece of Florida slid north into SE Virginia.

Greg...The trees are having a great time here in VB!! They really love the heat but we really need some rain...we are showing signs of lack of water,,,it's getting critical now!!! The Hibiscus are popping everywhere...I hope yours is doing alright? Hope all is well up in Brooklyn!!!
Oh..and yes the bees are going crazy with the sweet smell of the white blooms on the Sabals. Yhey are beautiful at first then they turn brown and get nasty looking when they turn to seed. I guess because they keep dropping things and it makes the tree look strange... But it's all a wonderful thing!!! Take care and heep me posted on the progress!!! :)

Ken...thank you I love the "Florida North" It keeps me very busy but I really enjoy working in the yard!!!

The temps are getting to me with the thermometer in the car yesterday at 104* that's without the indes being calculated in...last night here in PHL it was 96* at midnight...What a great time to come back to work!!!
Hope you all get some relief soon...we need the rain
