The case of the disappearing seedlings

I planted out my indoor-grown seedlings last weekend and noticed that within hours one or two of my Savoy cabbage seedlings (about 3" tall) had disappeared, with no trace except 1/4" of stem sticking out of the soil. Today, I noticed the same thing had happened to another cabbage seedling and a half-dozen "bees friend" plants that had had sturdy, woody stems and were about 9" tall. None of the nearby plants were affected; I have a large bed of lettuce and greens nearby that was completely untouched. No traces of the missing plants were left behind.

Does this sound like the familiar M.O. of any critter you recognize?
