The adult (flying) gnats lay their eggs in the potting medium, and it is their tiny opaque larvae which do the damage to the plants. Control should include the larvacide (the mosquito dunks), allowing the potting soil to dry out between waterings, improved air circulation, providing a potting medium that is porous enough to discourage fungus gnats in the first place. If you use the mosquito dunk solution, water just as you normally would, only less frequently to allow for some drying in between. Use for a month or so. There is nothing in your Ecosmart stuff that will control the larvae. Save it for other uses.

My pygmy date palm has been in my living room for 2 years. I DO notice it has a nasty habit of collecting dust and being difficult to keep clean - the best way for me was to give it a day outside once in a while and hit it with the hose on a light spray. It has grown VERY slowly but leaves turning brown has been a continuing problem. I have had a wonderful experience with my spindle palm as an indoor palm - even in relatively low light areas. It continues to grow indoors, although very slowly - and is beautiful, majestic-looking, and the leaves stay nicely green for a long time. I find they aren't easy to find, but if you find one, a spindle palm has worked out great for me. btw good call on the majesty palm. They don't really like being indoors - although there is no way one would grow very fast indoors. Good part about majesty palms is they are disposably-priced :)

Please excuse me, I am entirely a newbie. Any help is extremely appreciated!! I am trying to grow an Areca Palm indoors. They grow to be up to 7 feet tall. I need soilless because I don't want any risk at all of bugs, etc. I just prefer the idea. I have an idea to make a deep water culture system. Just to take a large plastic planter (maybe two feet diameter), drill a hole in the top side, and feed an air pump tube through that hole, putting a stone on the end of that tube. I'll fill the planter with nutrient solution to the top almost. Then I'll put my net pot on top with ceramic balls in it and transfer a local garden store plant from its soil pot to my system. Will this work? I want to keep the plant for several years. Can I just add more nutrient solution as time goes on? Thanks so much!!
