Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose - leaves curling and being eaten

My Zephirine Drouhin climbing rose has leaves that are curling, turning brown, and being half eaten. I am attaching a picture. What can I do?

are you sure thats not understock leaves??? .. if ZD is a grafted rose

can we see a pic of the whole ...

there is a rose forum ... and they are their own specialists.. should we not get anywhere in this forum ...

was the lawn recently sprayed for weeds???

has there been a frost or freeze since the leaves emerged????

What about sharing the place with another rose? I had a zephie which spring bloomed for me in my warm climate. It took a while for her to even do that. In the meantime, I planted another rose and a clematis to give some more color. It was a happy little zoo on that wall. We eventually gave the area to a trellised grape because my sister really wanted a a grape vine and they take space. Zephie went to the neighbor who admired her and I get to see her blooms every spring over the wall. This is the only rose she has because, like you, she cannot tolerate thorns. I would keep Zephie and get on the list for something else and then grow them together side by side and let them combine. I had a pretty australian honeysuckle and Joseph's Coat combination once. You have to frequently go in and make sure one plant does not overtake the other. My Zephie flowered best with plenty of horse manure and water soluble fertilizer but only in the spring with a few here and there after summer.

I didn't report on my other climbers grown on trellises one on each side of a path progressively shadier- La Biche- 5 yrs, a few canes 8' at most, balls early in the season but keeps on blooming a long time, supposedly is Mlle. de Sombreuil, Dream Weaver- 5 yrs, sensational some years, last year had some trouble defoliating with blackspot (I have a no-spray, sink or swim garden), 4-5', small striped red/white blooms, Marechal Niel- 3 yrs, not very vigorous, one or 2 3'canes, maybe one or 2 flowers last year. Champney's Pink Cluster- 3 yrs, 6+' multiple canes, lots of blooms for perhaps one long flush, then just a few, Jeanne La Joie- 2 yrs, rather close to a large cedar, 4-6' canes, sparse bloom so far is all I can remember, Climbing Cecile Brunner- 1 yr, several 6' canes, once blooming, also in the last shady spot. I hope to see more bloom on him this year.

By "substantial" I mean thickness -- and those laterals are substantial enough to be considered future canes. And something to keep in mind is that if you train substantial laterals as though they were canes, and they sprout their own laterals, you'll find that the rose will not be producing as many new canes. This is because, as I hypothesize, the root system can support only so many actively-growing buds. When you prune all the laterals down to a few bud eyes, you're removing actively-growing buds -- and this sends a signal to the roots to activate buds lower down which will become new canes or basal breaks. If you instead allow the laterals to grow, then train them as if they're main canes, they'll sprout laterals of their own. This means more actively-growing buds, which tells the root system "we're good up here -- no new canes needed." Which way works for you depends on the rose -- some can flower for years on the same canes, while others' canes will be exhausted after a year or two. You'll know as you go. If the cane looks somewhat "deflated", and new growth is thin and spindly, the cane is probably exhausted and should be cut back hard. If your rose is own-root, you can remove it entirely, and a new cane can come from the roots. If your rose is on rootstock, you'll want to cut it almost all the way off, leaving a few inches of it remaining. If you look closely, you'll see the "sleeping" bud eyes -- there's usually a sort of red freckle in the middle of a thin line going around the cane. If you cut back to one of these, it'll wake up, and a new strong cane should spring forth. If you can't see them, just leave four or five inches of cane and wait to see where a new bud starts growing, then cut back to just before that. I'm not personally familiar with the rose you pictured, but based on what I see, I'd leave those laterals and let them grow. When they start to harden -- but before they're totally stiff -- I'd start guiding them to go in the opposite direction from the main cane against the wall. In your pictures, that means to the left. If and when the rest of that main cane going to the right becomes exhausted, you can cut it back to the first strong lateral, and let that lateral function as the main cane. It's all something you'll learn as you go and become familiar with your roses. You'll get a sense of when a cane is exhausted, and you'll just cut back to the first "not exhausted" growth emanating from it. Remember that more laterals will form the closer to horizontal a cane is trained, and let that guide you. If a strong lateral is growing too long for where you want it to go, just prune it back to a set of leaflets with a bud eye facing the direction where you want new growth to go. :-) ~Christopher

I feel your pain, Rehka! Houston is a challenging rose climate. Hot and humid punctuated by surprise attacks of hail, Blue Northerns, hurricanes, floods and tornadoes! I grew up in Dallas but visited Houston off and on...(dramatic music)...in the summer. I also feel your husband's pain: Asian jasmine and trumpet vine in TX. A patch of neglected Asian jasmine once ripped off the bathroom window screen at my sister's house in Dallas! I think the hardy jasmine you mentioned might be Trachelospermum jasminoides, star jasmine? If so, I applaud you 100%! That's a great go-to fragrant vine for much of TX. I sent my mom a rooted cutting of Zeph for her Dallas garden, and it grew well there. I think Mom's rose lost about 50%-60% of its leaves during the hottest part of the year, but Zeph was pretty darn healthy (no spray except Safer fungicide) and grew fresh leaves when the temps cooled. Mom planted her Zeph in half day sun and grew a vine through the canes. Zeph rests for a longer summer stretch without blooming in TX, and your climate is getting hotter, so I agree that selecting a cultivar with more continuous bloom and foliage cover might be a wise choice for your preferences.. With training, Blush Noisette makes a charming, continuously blooming climber up to about 8' or so. It works well on an arch when 2 are planted, one on each side. The fragrance positively WAFTS in the evening. Humidity contributes to wafting so maybe BN is worth considering for Houston? For a large pergola, I'd plant a BN on one side and a yellow or white Lady Banks on the other. I'd train the Lady Banks up one side and across the top for a magnificent spring show with BN to carry on later in the season. Antique Rose Emporium sells both, but sometimes you have to jump in at the starting gate of restocking. They're popular! I'd call ARE and ask about blackspot tendencies in your area, and check on BN's resistance as well as inquiring about other Noisette possibilities. I'm a big fan of the fragrant, glorious Noisettes but only grow BN and MAC here in Portland. I've never grown Renae but have heard great things about it. I have a couple of baby Annie Laurie McDowells in my driveway pot nursery and am super excited about their inclusion in my garden! If you can get a ALM, and Kim Rupert gives it a thumbs up for your area and pergola, I'd absolutely hold out for her. The photos I've seen are breathtaking! Pure romance. Carol

Here it is! Ken, I don't know what you mean when you say "under stock leaves." We have recently sprayed WeedBGone, but it was at least 3 feet away and on the ground. The leaves definitely have holes in them.
No freezes recently, but we are having a cold snap now.

practice with your sprayer.. with water .. and learn how to make large course droplets ... which gravity makes fall to the ground.. rather than atomizing it.. so it wafts on the wind ...

this is accomplished thru counting the number of pumps to gain low pressure .. and twisting the nozzle to make drops rather than spray ...

pump 10 times.. see what happens.. 10 more.. see again.. etc .. e.g. on my tank.. it takes about 30 pumps.. on initial charge ... but my tank isnt your tank.. so figure it out for yourself ...

in this way.. whatever you are using.. falls to earth.. rather than drifting.. just remember.. its not french perfume ...

when you get real good.. you can also manipulate your trigger .. to make single drops come out the wand ...

i do all this on the blacktop ... to SEE ... what is coming out the tip ..

Unroll those curled up leaves and you will find your culprit larvae that are eating holes in leaves, along with the web they use to hold the leaf together.

Hi Georgia Mountain lad,
Right now, (Looking at the one picture you posted), I can only guess at four likely causes.
I need a few more picture's and more verbalization from you.

I need to see one or two rose canes and any rose budsÃ¢ÂÂ¦.And the underside of the leaves.

If you can describe the problem(s) a bit more and add a few more pictures, I may be able to "see" what the problem is.

Here are the 4 potential cause:
1. Rose Midge
2.Thrip damage
3.Leafhoppers
4.Leafrollers

Your problem is NOT caused by weed spraying, nor is it caused by "suckers" growing from the base of the grafted rose area.
In your picture, I see "rolled leaves". This suggests "Leafrollers". Is there "webbing" when you un-roll a leaf?

I also (think) I seeÃ¢ÂÂ¦ dark "burn-like" and deformed leaf damage. This suggests Rose Midge.

I also see "pimple-like" bumps on some leaves. Which suggests Leafhoppers.

Are both "rose buds" and leaves "distorted"? If so, this suggests Thrip Damage or Rose Mide damage.

It's the dead of winter now, so obviously you can't run out and snap a few pictures to post.
I hate to ask you wait and send more pictures in the spring (after the damage is done)Ã¢ÂÂ¦ Waiting until damage is done is BAD for the RoseÃ¢ÂÂ¦ and makes the solution far more difficult to eradicate the problem.

But, if you have no other pictures to post, you should be pro-activeÃ¢ÂÂ¦. and READ: The Ortho Problem Solver.
These books are VERY expensive, but offer EXCELLENT diagnosis.

Every Home Depot or Lowe's has a book in their garden center for customers to read (for free).
Also, you local library will have a copy.

After you read about the 4 probable culprits I've listed above (which are all insect related)Ã¢ÂÂ¦. and if your still not sure which bug is causing this problemÃ¢ÂÂ¦.I'd be happy to have a look at any additional photo's you post here on Garden Web this spring. (use Macro lens if you have the option to do so).
