I like it hot, but where is it ??

I am just so darn tired of winter I can't see straight!!

Anyone feel the same, where are you from, and what are you waiting for most of all?

I am in st louis and this week, lows are in the single digits and highs in the teens with windchills below zero. I hate winter....grrrrrr
I can't wait for July and August where the temp gets to 95 or higher and the humidity is so thick you can cut it (80% humidity). It is like a permanent sauna and I love it.....

I don't like it when it gets too hot but it's really cold now. Long winters here in Maine. How I get through it: I am planning my garden for this year and have figured out which peppers and tomatoes I will grow and have the rest to plan yet. Also I have some peppers growing inside that I hope to do some crossing experiments later.

Thanks for the great comments! I really didn't think I was going to like Miami Heat, but then it started to bloom! Now, I had to put it way far away from all other daylilies, so it would look good, and no clashing! Julia - I have no idea about the spots, just thought they looked like freckles and were cool. John, NO, geesh... I am waiting for those seedling to bloom! They are all busy putting on new fans, and no blooms... grrr... guess that is good though. I'll post photos when they do, I am so ready! I don't bother to disable the right click, because of screen capture. The watermarks are there so poachers know I don't want them used for them to make money off my work. If all the photos I post are originally watermarked and copywrighted, then I have a case, if I ever needed to go that route - in fact, if they go so far as to remove the watermark and use it anyway, more evidence for me. I don't mind people using them for personal use, but once you make money off my picture, some of that $ is mine! (via IPR - Intellectual Property Rights) :o) Nothing is ever safe from the serious bad guys... hence attorneys - ack.

Where do I start with my leaking hot water heater

It is an electric heater. We have a professional coming out to look at it today. I am afraid that we will need a new one because this one is old as dirt. Any suggestions on new hot water heaters? I don't think a tankless is the right fit for us but other than that, I don't know much.

You call that deer? This is deer... I need to train them to eat fire ants. Anyway...looks like a renovation is in order. What do you want? Do you want the nicest lawn on the block or do you just want it fairly weed free? The difference in maintenance is not that much, but to have the nicest lawn you'll need to spend a little extra on seed and soil testing. There are three options for grass type. Those are fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and a mix of both. Fescue is a bunch type grass meaning it will not spread quickly enough to effectively cover an area. The solution to that is buy more seed. When the grass plants die from abuse or disease or insects, they are dead. New seed is the only way to reestablish it. With Kentucky bluegrass it is a sod forming type of grass. It will spread fairly quickly to fill in any bare spots. Fescue remains green all year while KBG will likely go dormant in the winter and turn brown. It will come back at full strength in the spring. If you want the nicest lawn and you decide on KBG, you can go an extra mile and cause it to remain green through almost all of the winter. Your neighbors who also want the greenest lawn will hate you...if that's what you want. Here is a picture of a KBG lawn in eastern PA taken December 1, 2010. Here's the same lawn in April of 2011 after winter but firmly in spring. These are pictures of morpheuspa's lawn. He'll be along any minute now to help you. He spent extra to get a mix of Elite KBG seed. He also spends $25 per year on soil testing and a little more on micronutrients to amend his soil chemistry. Otherwise the lawn is organic, watered once a week, and mulch mowed once a week. Generally he fertilizes 3x per year, but some years he dabbles with experiments. Here's a summary of a renovaton: Spray with RoundUp Spray again with RoundUp a week later Rake up all the dead stuff Scatter seed Roll seed down to ensure good contact with the soil Water 3x per day for 3 weeks just enough to keep the top surface of the soil moist When the grass is up to 4 inches, start to mow and back off on the frequency of watering. There might be some details you want more info on, but that's a summary. You don't need to aerate, rototill, smother or cover the seed with top dressing, or do a lot of soil amendments. New seed has enough nutrients inside the seed to maintain the new grass plants for several weeks. Once you have roots in the ground, then you can deal with fertilizing. ...unless you want to use organics, and then you can fertilize any time you want. Now what are your new questions?

Its 52 below with the windchill this morning here in central Canada, so "winter cold" is a fairly relative subject. It stops being cold when the temps are in the minus 25 range.....these temps of late are well within the dangerous range and looking outside this morning, its hard to believe that anything could survive or ever grow again.

I watched a cottontail rabbit huddled under our birdfeeder pawing for some frozen tidbits this morning, being so cold that every movement he made was in extreme slow motion....I'm sure it was hard for him to stretch one single muscle. Yet he will work hard to stay alive.

When the winter doldrums creep in at this time of year, I like to watch the wild critters in the yard. It somehow strengthens my resolve, and just as a visit to my mini-greenhouse does about now, I'm reminded that the promise of spring is intact. The warmth will return and more comfortable days are just a little ways off.

fiedlermeister, I can sympathize with those Maine winters! I live in the north part of "the county" and other than the past couple of days where it got up to like 25F... it's been more like -20F to 5F. (certainly not as cold as animoosh however).

I've decided to start with an inside grow of tomatos peppers and herbs. This has certainly given me a new hobby to pass the "winter time".

I probably will not even move the plants outside considering they'll probably be bearing fruit by then.

Yes, the light is a MH & HPS combo (sun system VII).

Will be firing those up within the next week or so, once my seedlings are are grown up enough...
