A very, very odd thing

I'm not sure where to post this, but the p/a forum is where I hang out. I came back from a 9-day vacation to find something had...nibbled (?) off the tops of my wooden trellises. It gets stranger; let me explain.

I have a series of wooden trellises hanging from the soffit of my garage. So imagine the 6 x 1" wooden posts sticking out of the top of a trellis, hanging 10' in the air, nibbled (?) down, similar to beaver damage. The trellises have been there for years, and I'm fairly sure its recent and all at once, because the wood underneath is newer colored. I have about 30 linear feet of trellis, about 20+ of these nibbled down wooden slats.

I'm stumped. What did this? In once case, it was nibbled down almost 5". A very hungry and lost (and nimble) beaver? A squirrel? But why??
