Very odd Rudbeckia triloba

Late last year, December, I posted a photo I took of a juvenile Rudbeckia triloba that was flowering out of season, its more mature mates had finished flowering months before.

The odd thing is that it's still in bloom! It kept its blooms all winter and is still displaying them. Here's a photo I took today. How can that be???

I wouldn't worry overmuch Echolane - I have an anisodontea capensis which blooms continuously all year round...although it does have an obvious 'downtime' in summer. Moreover, I have a Graham Thomas rose which has also remained green all winter with the occasional bloom...I am considering whether to whip off the old leaves...which are showing a little blackspot. It looks like new rosettes of foliage are growing from the base of yours...so all is good. As for your digi - I am not keen to be the first to chime in here as I, too, have often been caught out in this perplexing issue of winter foliage..and when, or if, to cut (gaura, penstemon, salvia). I don't grow digiplexus...but I do grow several perennial foxgloves which are looking v.similar. As mine are in a wild garden area, I won't be fussing overmuch - new green growth overtakes the ratty stuff which shrivels and falls off...but if they were specimen plants on view, I would cut them back to the base and remove all the really bad foliage - you should see my auriculas after winter - grim. | have to clean them up to naked stem...but are now looking terrific

Keep an eye on this particular plant echolane....maybe a new and improved triloba ;).

(I love trilobas....that reminds me I wonder if it is too soon to notice the tell tale rosette of this returning biennial?)

I have seen them too. Mixed messages concerning hardiness and whether the plants are really perenial. No information whether the seeds germinated 'normally' or developed in a laboratory. They are marketed as Rudbeckias: Berlin, Dublin, Peking.

I am still trying to get a grip on collecting those impatient seeds.... Seems like just when I get the hang of it - BANG - one gets loose and sets up a chain reaction throughout the plants! You can hear the fallout all over the leaves in the garden bed! Soon- I will have to teach myself to winnow again- and hope there are no stray breezes to help me out. Seems like that happens every time I try- I have the most unlikely volunteers just outside the back door patio.... Story- I can see your kitty chasing! Great image! As far as those seed bug/larva/eggs go- I have found that once I know they are there- a few weeks in a bag in the freezer seems to kill what ever is buggin the seeds- and doesn't seem to hurt the seeds in the least. Sometimes the whole seed heads go in there for a spell. Julie

It must be a runty Rudbeckia triloba then as the flower is almost unmistakable.. How interesting! Hybrid variability in the genetics then. If you have a sea of them, they must put on an incredibly showy bloom season! Did you ever have one bloom in the spring like mine seems to be doing?? I'll keep watching mine and see what other odd things it might do, like put on some new leaves. They are said to be biennial or weakly perennial Its be fun if mine turned out to be long lived :-)

Rudbeckia 'Herbstonne' is now on my wish list! Heliopsis 'Venus' is a robust bloom machine with large semi double flowers, plant requires staking though. If you want a heliopsis that provides masses of color for months on end, 'Venus' is one to consider! I never bore of the many colors and forms of rudbeckia !

Unlikely I should be so lucky to have a genetic mutation....but even if I did, would anyone care?

I love Rudbeckia triloba too. A large plant in full bloom is a sight to behold, though you need plenty of room for them. And am happy to have a few extra seedlings every year too.

Not sure I understand what you mean when you say the tell tale rosette of the returning biennial. At least not on this plant, which should be nothing but dead stalks at this point in time. I will see what I can see tomorrow.

Not sure I understand what you mean when you say the tell tale rosette of the rerurning biennial

I just meant that in its first year triloba will not flower but instead you will see it alive as a basal mound in the shape of a "rosette" (of leaves).
