Kaliaman and others, The spelling is monoecious and dioecious. Also, the relationship is opposite, monoecious(one house) plants have both male and female in the one plant. Despite having both sexes on one plant, it still may not pollinate itself. Blooms need to overlap and pollen must be delivered, do you see? Even if it self pollinates, cross pollination is the better bet as it often produces heavier fruit set. I won't speak to the plants mentioned but this gives an idea about the possible barriers. A couple loose rules; first, sexual reproduction with a different plant is usually what the plant is looking for, and second, nature doesn't like rules, so expect exceptions to whatever rules you think there are. It's too bad the industry doesn't just tell it how it is. It's all in an effort to simplify what cannot be simplified to have gardening appear more approachable and easy. Which speaks to a larger problem but I'll resist going into that.

Yeah, what exactly constitutes the F8 generation depends a lot on what you consider to be the true base of the line. On one hand, you could say the F1 generation is the one directly resulting from the two pure breeds you crossed, but by F8 there's no telling where you will be from that point. Probably just a fairly common looking pepper (as the unique appearance of many peppers is a direct result of their breeding). A better starting point for the generations would be once you have achieved the pepper you want (right size, color, heat, etc) and count that as the F1 and ignore all the generations of cross breeding it took you to reach that point. For example, I've seen where other people have crossed bhuts with bells, and they basically look like jalapenos to me. One could say thats an F1 generation cross, but really all you've done (IMO) is recreate the jalapeno. If you wanted something the shape of a bell with the heat of a bhut, you'd need to do a *LOT* more breeding until you actually got that result, and then stabilize that. Thats the definition I tend to use for myself, 8 generations that are the *same*. When you can compare the F8 and it looks the same as the F1, congratulations, you've created a new pepper strain.

Hi, With squash, they will cross pollinate, but not with all types of squash. It sounds confusing, but it really isn't : ) When you look up squash their latin name has two parts. All squash have the first same name Cucurbita. The second half of the name, which is the species name part, can vary. Like regular zucchini and yellow summer squash's second name is pepo. So your Eightball Zucchini's proper full name is Cucurbita pepo 'Eightball'. Sweet Meat's full name is Cucurbita maxima 'Sweet Meat'. So since Sweet Meat and Eightball's second half of their name differs they can not cross. Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino second name is moschata so it can not cross with either Eightball or Sweet Meat. Now Scallop Sunburst, Costata Romanesca, and Table Queen are all pepos, so they will cross with each other and Eightball, but not Sweet Meat or Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino. Is this all starting to make sense? I hope so. Your Green Striped Winter Squash's second name is mixta so that is a different type that won't cross with the others. Lemon Cucumber is totally out of the pic since it is Cucumis sativus. Not even the first name botanically matches so there is no way. So you can grow a lot of squash and save seeds as long as the species(second name) differ. Oh and remember neighbors who live close by can cause cross pollination. With your Zucchetta Rampicante Tromboncino chances are lower that someone is growing a moschata variety than a pepo type like zucchini. It would still be good to check. Remy
