Red Oak tree with bark loss

Texan Gal

We have a red oak tree that is about 40' tall, and ten years old. Last year we noticed the bark is missing in places, where a large branch meets the trunk. It seems to be healing over this patch with new growth.

I wonder if anyone can tell or give an educated guess as to what happened to our Red Oak? Is there anything I can do to help the tree heal and/or prevent more bark loss?
