In need of expert help quick, please!!, Trees are dying?

Hi all,

Got a major issue with my Windmills. Seems like they are giving up.

My little Takil was the 1st one. After I thought it survived this winter, it started to push up a new branch. That new branch got to a certain height, stalled and instead of the leaves fanning out, they kind of "coiled up" or "twisted" and turned brown.

The branch actually crumbled when I went to go tug on it. Like it was totally dried out. The rest of it pulled out of the center! :(

Now My bigger Fortuneis....

The bigger one has pushed out a new branch and fanned out very nicely. It didnt get as long as the others but it opened nice and wasn't real nervous.

Then a new center branch started to emerge. It got up to a certain point and seems to have stopped! The leaves on the center branch have split into 2 groups but aren't fanning out like I'm used to, almost like its giving me the peace symbol. lol The center where the branch is coming out seems to be turning yellow color.

My other Fortunei I just planted in the front is doing the SAME exact thing! Except the leaves are starting to coil or shrivel or what ever you want to call it. Its still green, but what gives here!

Is this a disease? Could it be from the cold?

Any help or suggestions will be really appreciated....

Here are pics of my larger fortunei: ( I had my neighbor watch my son and went to the store to buy copper fungicide. I did apply it though I don't know if thats whats needed here...)

Here are pics of the smaller Fortunei in the front, seems to be doing a littlw worse as the cetner leaves are twisitng!

Calm down... Spear pull is not the end of the world..

How much have you watered them ?

Does the ground drain good !

They look to wet ..

hope4greenthumb, I want to say that it is some type of aeonium and that these tend to lose their leaves depending on the exact species, but please don't take my word for it, as I am honestly not sure beyond that. I could be totally wrong and I hope someone else is better able to help you identify these plants (and is able to let you know if their leaf loss is normal or not). Elizabeth

Did you ever find out what this was? I was search for the same thing and came across your post. We have several similarities coincidentally. (see pics) We just moved into our first home East of Plano in the Dallas area. The beds in the front of the house are new and were put in by the seller to give the house curb appeal. Shortly after moving in the crepe myrtle turned back, quit growing leaves and powdery white spots appeared all over it. The landscaper we found on NextDoor said fungus and pulled it out and that's when he covered everything in the red mulch. He also moved all the boxwoods and magnolia a foot forward because they were a few inches from the foundation. Later in November he pulled the magnolia tree because it was too close to the house and said they are known to have invasive roots. It had also dropped most of its leaves. The above pictures are how it looked at the beginning of November. Here are a few from today... Since then the boxwoods have all turned from green to dark red. I am worried I am going to have to yank these too. We have a RainBird sprinkler system but do not plan to use it much so I am thinking we might just need to replace them with native Texas plants that are drought tolerant, but I am worried about the existing issue. Especially if it is fungal related. Does this mean that my soil has fungus in it and will affect everything I plant in it? Could the mulch have caused this as this seems to be when the decline started? Also, the magnolia tree was sitting on top of a root the size of a mans leg. It was directionally going toward the house. Should I cut this so it quits growing? Have I wrecked my beds? Please help!

Impressive amount of thought and work going into this ... I will enjoy looking into what you are proposing; until I can, I wanted to throw another option to you just because of the general look of it (there are so many out there, that is part of the joy). I have a "Sherwood Frost" arborvitae that is very slow growing, and tops out at about ten feet. It is a wider pyramidal shape, but is definitely NOT deer-proof. Perhaps part of what you like about the aesthetics of the chamy obtusa is the architectural way that their fronds splay and twist a bit. It is definitely suited as a specimen focal point. I actually believe mine failed because I had them in very sandy soil. They became thinned out with interior browning instead of the full look that I was going for (as a hedge). However, few chamaecyparis will take soil that is too moist. I did have one in the blueish family that actually liked a wet soil (will have to look back to see what sub-species it was). How was it planted? What did you refill the hole with? What was the followup watering schedule/pattern/method/amount? Have you looked underneath that trunk protection device? Yes, the ground drains just fine. The spear pull from the little Takil was bad. It was brown and dried up and pulled right out. I should have left it, put I yanked from the ground.

Ive been reading that maybe I'm watering them too much and its not hot enough outside. Not sure.
I put C. fungicide down the center today and will cross my fingers to see what happens!

yeah lay off the water as a matter of fact let them dry out completely and whatever you do keep the crown dry !

All the plants you have pictured look like they will make it, but do keep them on the dry side until it gets hotter. Also, be careful with copper fungicide, overdoing it will do more harm than good.

Hey chip i have one in a pot that i pulled from the ground
in march it was over watered the place it was in did not drain well....
I put it in a pot not expecting much as the spear pulled out but now i see new fans coming out of the center and they are strong as i can not pull them out just give it some time.

Thanks for your replies. I have been keeping them dry but it rained last night and tomorrow is forecasted as well.
Hopefully the rain water isn't as harmful as the tap water.

I should have left my Takil in place. The branches were pretty much green. Just really weird how the center branch that came up was completely brown and shriveled like it was burned. Strange.
I will let all know how these 2 turn out. Crossing my fingers.
