sprinkles today/dangerously dry

We had a few sprinkles today, but our ground is brick dry.

Yesterday I tried to plant my new Coneflowers in an area that i had not watered, and I couldn't get through the dirt. I had to soak the area, work my digging tool into the ground to break through a clump, and soak the area with water. This is good soil, not native clay.

Having had this experience, I wonder about how safe we are from fires. I have never ever tried to break through ground this dry. If we were to have a cloud burst, I am afraid the ground could flood before it would absorb the water. And now it is almost August.

(I have read about the farmers and the animals, but had not realized the extent of the drought right here where I live and have been watering.)

What a year!

Sammy
