Desperately Seeking Habaneros

Ciao all,

My boyfriend is the pepper grower, I stick mainly to tomatoes. Even though we're in zone 5, it seems like there is a push to start seeds soon because of the very long growing season, particularly with habaneros. That being said, I know he'd really like to expand on his one white habanero that gave us very small fruit last year. What he's looking for is a VERY hot pepper to spice up salsas and other Mexican dishes. We're on a particularly tight budget and were hoping we might be able to trade for these high demand chilis. I know I could have put this in the trade section, but we're in Canada and that area isn't getting much traffic at the moment.

Seeds he's got a great deal of include:

Corno di Toro Rosso

Yellow Bell Pepper Asti di Giallo

Hungarian Yellow Hot Wax

In addition, I have quite a number of heirloom tomato varieties if people are willing to trade habanero seeds for tomato seeds.

Has he tried Stokes Seeds in St Catherines for Habs??

I have some Hab seeds to share just email me and we will make a trade, I have several kinds and will check which ones when I get Home. Not alot but a few to get you started.

Your best bet is to have someone install unfinished flooring and finish it to match. Due to supply chain and economic issues, that will be expensive. Please note that bathrooms are allowed to have different floors from the rest of the house. Any flooring continuity rules do not apply. Lovely floor by the way.

Desperately seeking suggestions for awkward corner nook!

Apologies if this has already been said but I don't have time to read all comments. I had a living room that was similiarly awkward and it took me so long to find a good furniture placement. Bear with me. While I can't see the rest of the living room, I suggest arranging the living room furniture with the end of that stone wall (fireplace I assume?) as if it were the wall. So in other words the rug would stop where or near where the fireplace ends. What makes that lovely space awkward is that it looks as if it's trying to be part of the living room. My suggestion would be, after you move the rug, switch the table and chair. Table under painting, chair in a "room with a view." It becomes a destination, a resting spot, a lovely special corner for retreat. At that point you have created an entrance area for the living room, possibly a gallery effect on the wall. Add a lamp to the table below the picture to make it a a real statement piece, which it is! Maybe some lighting in window area. Then you play with placement of things in the corner that draws the eye and gives people an opportunity to say, what's the story behind those skis? P.S. What a view out that window!!

Paint walls solid white or very light color - get rid of wallpaper. I would not swap the toilet as older toilets were smaller. Replacing with a modern unit of any style will take up more room. The wall mounts don't save room and put stress on the wall. The shutters are gorgeous so keep! You simply cannot buy shutters with thin slats like that anymore. Remove the "secret" door and glass shower door. Simply use a thin white curtain. If the shower will not be used the space could be converted into a storage closet or combination of sink and shelves. Change floor tiles to white or very light color. Your sink is adorable and unique. If it is functional I would keep. The towel bar could be swapped with clear lucite or thin chrome bar. Remove wall basket. That space could be plain wall, a piece of artwork, or a bathroom towel holder (clear lucite or chrome). We remodeled our small home bath and are familiar with brightening up such rooms and maximizing space.

Byron, thank you for the suggestion of Stokes Seeds. We'd taken a look at their offerings and packet for packet, they're a bit spendy, but I appreciate your input, thank you.

I know you said white habs, but if he's looking for "VERY hot" go for some chocolate habs. I've only had a couple and they kicked my ass. I am growing a choc hab called "congo black" for the first time this year.

You can't judge a hab by it's color. An orange can be hotter than a red, with a yellow being hotter than the orange. However chocolate habs are always very hot. If anyone disagrees I would love to hear it.

Also, have you tried overwintering your peppers? You'll need a grow light but it keeps your plants alive through the winter. A good light in a closet and some foylon on the walls you can grow peppers year round.

Thanks so much, Rich, for your generous offer. I'll send you an email. I know he needs to start seeds very soon as these habaneros seem to take much longer than everything else to germinate.

Habbob, he's mainly looking for colouration and flavour variety, but not necessarily the world's hottest pepper, lol. I don't think he'd rule it out, but I also don't think it's his holy grail either. The chocolate habanero was one he was very keen for.

We've got a couple of heating mats to help with germination, but we're still working on obtaining the shop lights. We've got a metal rack that could support 3' shop lights, but it seems like the 4' ones are more standard. I know they exist, it's just a matter of finding them.
