I’m in zone 10a, but since you haven’t got a reply, I’ll tell you my experience. I bought the bulbs at a county fair and put them in a good sized pot. They grew well, bloomed with lovely fragrance. I was amazed that they tolerated full sun In my zone. In a few years they outgrew the pot and I had lost interest in them, so I put them in the ground where they continue to grow and bloom in random places in the rose garden. Oddly, one is blooming right now. They die back for the winter and resprout in the spring. They develop bulblets (or whatever they are called.)

Though I didn't find it listed in any of the catalogs I archived on Help Me Find for California Nursery Company, Odorata was sold for many years as a garden rose, just as Dr. Huey was and still is. Those plants may be the remnants of garden plants or stock plants or they may be escaped stocks. Who's to say they were even produced by the company? They could have been obtained and planted from other sources. There was discussion in the 1930s, particularly by Dr. J.H. Nicholas, about which stock seemed better for which rose class, but that wasn't as important as what stock was the most universally suited across the country. You didn't want to bud cold hardy door yard roses to Gloire des Rosomanes or Odorata then ship them to climates too cold for them. Nor did you want to supply the arid, alkaline areas with multiflora (which entered the picture later than those) as it isn't happy in alkaline, dry, compacted soil. Wichurana hybrids are as they secrete acids in their root zones to help alleviate the alkalinity. Based upon where the majority of their sales occurred, the stock best suited was usually selected. A few tried using multiple stocks for different zones but it usually proved too expensive and led to left over plants they had to move or destroy. Economies of scale made it easier and more profitable to use one stock and leave it at that, which is what producers do now and have for decades. I wasn't quite sure if you were suggesting budding roses to fruit stocks. That is thought to be why the fruit viruses (apple mosaic virus - referred to as rose mosaic virus, prunus necrotic ringspot virus and strawberry ringspot virus) are in our rose product. It's suspected it resulted from Luther Burbank's propagation experiments.
