What are your top 5 performers this spring?

Which peonies were your favorite this spring? Which ones were you most impressed with?

For me these were my favorites:

Henry Bockstoce for scent
Petite Elegance for form and picotee color
Cytherea for longest lasting cut flower
Nick Shaylor for nicest white/blush rose form
Walter Faxon for best pink

and all of these did not flop for me although Henry Bockstoce was cut too early to know if it will flop when it is fully opened.

We had such a crappy spring here with our late snows and way below average temps, I didn't have as many blooms as normal. Coral Sunset still performed perfectly, though. First year for Itoh blooms in my garden. I thought Singing in the Rain would be a favorite but I think I like Strawberry Blonde better--it's a fuller flower and the yellow is very pretty. Raspberry Rumba is a new favorite and the blooms of Louise Marx were truly beautiful and HUGE! Last one is (I think!) Mrs F D Roosevelt. This one didn't have a tag but I'm at least 80% sure is Mrs FDR! I normally don't like floppy doubles that much but that one is worth the effort of staking....

It has been wet here as well. Raspberry Rumba, Prairie Moon, and Snow Swan all did very well nonetheless. Do Tell is always one of my favourites, but it did not do as well as usual this year, though it is still a great plant. White Cap is new for me - planted fall of 2011 - but it did very well. Half a dozen main blooms, unaffected by the rain, plus side buds.

I've had my flower beds for 10 years and I'm going to have to google most of what everyone is wanting just to see what they are and what they look like. My top 5 right now is 1. Spuria Irises any color. 2. Oriental Lilies 3. Asiatic Lilies 4. Flowers that bloom until the first frost. 5. Different color day lilies I have no idea the names of the ones I have. I've been trying to put a name to them but so many of them look alike. I am cleaning off my hillside and have black raspberry vines if anyone is interested. I also have Purple Wisteria, old fashioned purple lilac bushes, and a weeping willow tree that I can take starts from get them rooted and send. I don't like taking starts from those unless someone wants them. I've never shipped a plant so I may need some assistance on how the best way is to ship.

"We have many of us on this forum that sow seeds in flats, pots, jugs, whatever, throughout the late winter and early spring to grow our plants." That should say "outside" after "jugs". Let me try this again. Many of us on this, and other forums on GW, utilize wintersowing to start our plants from seed. We sow the seeds into various types of containers and place them outside during the winter. When the seed is ready to sprout, it comes up, produces a beautiful seedling and gets planted in the garden, where it quite often does better than the ones that we start indoors. Check out the wintersowing forum and you'll find many, many people everywhere that are enjoying this easy way of starting plants. Does that sound better? Wow, I must've been half asleep earlier. Val, you, of course, may use any medium you decide upon. But if I may, I would suggest a a "seed starter" mix. Along with the issues of porosity, potting soils can harbor and support fungi. Established seedlings can usually ward-off such problematic issues, but those newly germinated cannot. If all you can get is potting soil, it can work, but it will mean quite a bit more attention on your part, and seed starter is easy to find or build yourself. As far as fertilizers, the choices cannot really be narrowed down until you decide if such personal preferences - like growing organically - is important to your lifestyle and methods. I don't really do containers, so I'll not post on that issue. Good luck.

You're looking for what's called "black pipe" (because of it's color). It is traditionally used for gas supply lines. You'll find it in the aisle next to the copper, plastic, and galvanized (silver color) pipe. The most popular brand of pipe clamp hardware is made Pony although other companies make essentially the same thing. The hardware is available for both 3/4" and 1/2" pipe but most people use 3/4". Plastic pads for the jaws are also available to help protect the surface being clamped although scraps of wood can be used and some people fabricate their own pads. As mentioned before pipe clamps are popular because they're relatively inexpensive and can be made to almost any length, limited only to the pipe you have on hand. Woodworkers, in general, tend to be a frugal group. A variation on the theme are "bar" clamps, which use a steel bar in place the pipe. Like a pipe clamp, one end is fixed and the other moveable. The smaller bar clamps are often called "F" clamps because of their shape. They're available in a variety of lengths from about 4" to 36" for light to heavy duty applications and with a variety of jaw depths. The drawback to pipe clamps is that the jaws of the clamp doesn't say perpendicular to the pipe which can create problems when gluing up panels - a series of board glued together to make something larger (think of a table top). As pressure is applied, the boards want to bow slightly. The traditional way to deal with this problem was to use "cauls" which are pieces of wood clamped across the surface to keep the panel flat. Bessey developed K-body clamps which were designed to keep the jaws parallel. K-body clamps are fantastic clamps and unfortunately rather expensive (and generally worth the money). Other companies have introduced their version of the K-body clamp but I haven't used any of them. Another drawback to pipe clamps is that they have a relatively small jaw depth and for some applications, like a frame and panel door, that can create a challenge. Most of the K style clamps have a much deeper jaw. I might suggest buying clamps as needed (and depending on what you're doing, you may need a lot of clamps).

Had to look up Snow Swan and White Cap--wow, White Cap looks dramatic! Snow Swan is beautiful, too. Do you have any pics of your favs? Just saw the Raspberry Rumba shrub pic you posted on my cactus peony string, gorgeous!
I think I might regret this forum, I've ordered far too many new peonies this year, mainly because of all of the beautiful member pics posted!

Just went back and counted, between the ones I received in early spring and those I'm waiting for in fall, I've ordered 53 peonies this year. That is a staggering amount of plants for me....At least I've already received around 25 of them so I might have a chance of planting the rest in a timely manner....I ordered the ones for fall from 4 different places so maybe they won't come in at the same time...
Normelly, one of the fall orders is Prarie Moon, really excited about that one!

Here's White Cap. As I said, it was planted in fall 2011. Snow Swan is about 10 years old.

Liz, what does Louise Marx look like? Do you have a photo of it?
Everyone is raving about Mrs. FDR. Mine did not bloom this year. Hopefully it will make up for it next year.

I really like the White Cap, too. The reason I liked Louise Marx so much is the size of the bloom, easily 7" across. It has really dark green foliage so the contrast is very nice, too. The singles stand up to rain and wind much better than most doubles and LM blooms lasted a long time compared to some of the others.
This picture makes it look like it's fernleaf foliage, it's not--there was a daylily right behind. The angle of the shot is misleading....
