What are your top 5 tropical/exotic fruit and why?
Comments (38)here are the top 5 tropical fruit trees i would like to successfully grow and try, not necessarily taste wise as they are so rare i have yet to try them, but would excite me to see all the names are linked to relevant articles Lodoicea maldivica Coco De Mar "Densuke" black Watermelon Levins Black Pomegranate (not sure if the pic is accurate) Musa Kluay Namwah Nuan Jan (they are the white ones) Garcinia mangostana Durio Dulcis...See MoreWhat's Your Top 5 Tropical Fruits?
Comments (128)1:White Sapote. It gets no good publicity because it's far best picked off the tree, chilled ,then eaten. Also the fact it grows best in the high tropics or coastal California means all those who list the zone 11 fruits don't know the greatness of this z9-10 tree. 2: Mango-if you can grow it-do it!. 3: Avocado..could be no.1 if I think more about it! 4: Lemon..just so useful. Goes pretty good with Avocado-lol. 5:Orange's.Hard to beat a sweet chilled Orange. close: Pineapple-home grown are mouth watering. NO.122: Agave tequila..you know why,wink,wink....See Morewhat are your Top 5 Mango varieties?
Comments (132)this is my Florigon i got the seed from someone in Fla a couple of years ago. its growing very nicely, but is getting large for the container. it will go in ground in the spring. i am putting it close to the house on a south wall, in hopes it will last next winter. i havbe about 8 seedlings, most from Ataulfo/champagne from the store bought fruit, but, also have Neelum and Coconut cream. i will wait till those get larger, but a few of the Ataulfo are in ground, in hopes of a miracle that they survive this winter... if one does, there is a very good chance it will survive the next few winters, unless we get a really hard freeze which does happen every few years. the climate here is a bit strange... i would say out of a 10 year span, we will get 3 years of no freeze, ... another 3 or 4 of just hitting 29 to 32F, one or 2 hitting 27F and maybe one below that at 24 or 25F. i am thinking on those days i can build a box around it with a frost cloth. being near the house helps a lot with the bricks re-radiating heat at night. ... so ... to me, a seedling that can be 3 degrees F more hardy, can mean the world in the chance of getting fruit one day....See MoreWhat jobs would you consider to DIY in your home build?
Comments (17)Thank you everybody for your tips and info. Much appreciated! Awnmyown, Thanks for your encouragement and warnings about the boredom of taping drywall and difficulties involved in trim work. I think he will have a go at both of these in say a walk-in closet or such less noticeable spot and see how it turns out. He actually was very skilled at the trim work before, but on a much smaller scale. Good idea about the closet organizers and staining (e.g. staining the steps needs to be done) and door locks/handles, etc. There are lots of little jobs that are not too difficult for a handy person with some extra time available. Good for you to have built so much yourself. We have been GCing our build since the beginning and that has been lots of stress too (we are part way through plumbing and electrical rough-in and have the outside all cladded). Subs have done all the work thus far. Flgargoyle, It is amazing that you have done all that work on your own!! It certainly sounds like a labour of love. Too bad about the weather delays. Our two oldest kids are teen boys and one is a very keen labourer (he had volunteered for Habitat for Humanity). The other has some experience with electrical so may help install fixtures and has time to spare to assist with hanging the drywall. Autumn, Glad to hear from another DIY type who is also combining that task with raising a family (we have four kids). Looks like you will have plenty on your plate! Good to hear you have had good success with lots of DIY jobs. I will pass along your warnings about the taping to DH. Like you, we are wanting to give it a go before hiring out the mudding. Jrldh, We will keep your warnings in mind. We have a sub contractor who may be willing to be paid on an hourly basis to supervise DH's work. He has already tentatively agreed to this as we have given him lots of business. He lives close by so would schedule the paid supervision meetings to suit him. Carol...See More- 8 years ago
