ailing sago palm

Hope you guys can help here-I have a several year old sago that I wintered over in an unheated garage this past winter that has apparently suffered what looks to be generalized wasting, what with all leaves/fronds wilted and pale.

I planted it outside a few days ago and now, it is not only sad-looking but sunburned as well! (Sounds like I was trying to kill it?)

Could someone please advise if this plant is worth saving and what can I expect in the way of leaf drop-could it rebound later with appropriate outdoor treatment?

How cold did your garage get?? I also overwinter a ton of subtropicals in my garage (including the Sago palms), but make sure the temps do not fall below freezing. If you garage was dark, the plant also burned due to it not being acclimated to an already potent March sun (despite the chill). This plant in not cold hardy in zone 6 without some serious winter protection. I would put it back into the container and keep it inside until milder weather--keep it on the dry side until it resumes new growth. The plant may loose ALL its leaves but still has an excellent chance of coming back. I had one that I took for dead only to have it suddenly push a new crown of leaves. These are pretty robust, strong plants that want to stay around for centuries--but you're pushing it to the limit. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and hope for success, njoasis-I would hate to give up on it so early in the season, will do what I can to get it healthy again!

oh my gosh......i'm so very very very sorry!!!!! Our other dog got ahold of one too (4 days after my first dog died). It was during the holidays so we could not get our two large sago palms removed for 4 days. Somehow the 2nd dog found a seed that must have rolled under a bush and we didn't see it. Anyway, we got him to the the vet within MINUTES and they made him throw up and ran charcoal thru his system to absorb anything that might have left his stomach. It worked, and he is fine 1.5 years later BUT the seed had not left his stomach. It is my understanding from my vet that had the seed or part of the plant gotten out of his stomach and into his system he would have died too. I'm just wondering if they keep running charcoal thru your cat if they could absorb the poisons? I'm so so very sorry that i can not be more help. Does he/she have black black stool? It's a sure sign of liver failure i was told. Please let me know how your cat is! It took approximately 4 to 5 days for our dog to die (i'm guessing because she really didn't show signs of even being sick for the first day and was just lethargic with black stool until she was completely down)...our hearts are completely broken as i feel i should have known about these HORRID POISONOUS PLANTS! Even now as i tell EVERYONE about them they don't remove them...it is beyond my comprehension. Prayers for you and your kitty!

I have the same problem with my sago palm -- our house is under construction -- I put th palm in an area where it gets northern light and under a large tree. It is in a very large pot -- and has been for the last 5 years or so. It has never drooped like this before -- ever. Does my palm have root rot? It is difficult to plant it in the ground as the entire property is torn up for construction and landscaping. I grew this palm from a baby -- it is about 15 years old. Suggestions, anyone? Does it need B-12 and fresh soil? I watered copiously today -- I hope I didn't drown it...

I have 3 very large Sagos, one is about 8 ft tall. They all stopped growing about 5 years ago at the same time. They are about 20 ft from each other. I just cut one down. The interior looks good, not rotten, wet, a little sticky / sappy, seems OK. But I assume they all caught some disease and will not grow again. Anyone have any insight? I have fertilized them etc. They are probably 40+ years old. I really liked them and cannot replace them, way too large.
