Sago Palms slow growing???? Not at my house - help!
Comments (4)I'M NEW AT THIS TYPE OF PLANT...I BOUGHT ME A BONSAI TREE AT WAL-MART & THAT 1 WAS RIGHT BESIDE IT...PLANTED THE SAME WAY..I THOUGHT IT WAS A DIFFERENT TYPE OF BONSAI TREE..I COULDENT SEE THE TAG AT ALL..IT WAS BURIED IN SOME VERY SMALL HARD ROCKS THAT I CAN'T GET IT OUT TO READ HOW TO TAKE CARE OF IT.ALL I SAW WAS THAT IT WAS A SAGO PALM. I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE AT LEAST READ WHAT KIND IT WAS BEFORE I BROUGHT IT HOME..BUT I JUST LOVED THE WAY IT LOOKED..SO I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST A BONSAI TREE & I WOULD TAKE CARE OF IT THE SAME...I DON'T KNOW HOW OFTEN TO WATER IT. I HAVE IT ON A DRESSER BY A WINDOW, WHERE I CAN CONTROL HOW MUCH SUNLIGHT IT GETS. BUT I SEE ON HERE THAT EVERYONE HAS THEIRS OUTSIDE..I THOUGHT IT WAS AN INSIDE PLANT...CAN IT BE? THANK YOU...See MoreSago Palm Stagnant
Comments (11)I have been growing offshoots of sago palm recently as a hobby. One thing that I learned from my experience is that you do not want to plant the trunk too low as to bury the new fronds. The first time I planted some bulbs(brown trunk area), I planted them too deep. The old fronds stayed green for years, yet no growth came. I had experimented with other sagos. I had a sago in thick almost clayish-like soil and the roots would not grow. They would just get little wart-like dots on the existing roots. I think sago palms are aerobic growing. They need as much exposure to the surface of the soil as possible. Grows best when only the roots are undergound. The entire bulb or trunk should be getting air. Well drained soil always, full sun, surrounding it with mulch to reserve moisture is a good way to make sure that palm grows. The link below is very important to me. It helped me realize many of my mistakes in propagating sago. It may help you if you want to grow one yourself instead of buying a new one. Comments (2)nikolabc How big do you want the box wood plants and how many ? I have pulled several 4-6 inch ones out of my flower beds and thrown them in the trash. The birds plant them for me. I could possibly dig up some in the 3-6 ft height range. They are trying to take over my garden area. I cut off a 5 ft stick from one last year (Spring) and stuck it in the ground to support another plant and the darned thing rooted. If you are interested LMK and we could meet half way. I live in belton, thats next to Temple TX Thanks, princealbert...See MoreMoved to a new home they have 4 potted sago palms need help
Comments (3)Firstly, these are cycads and not palms, Cycas revoluta. They tend to grow in 'flushes' where you get a lot of new leaves coming up at once and the old leaves die off. The furriness you see at the centre of the plant is the growing point and is normal. And it is normal for them to produce small plants on the trunk or at the base. Always make sure they have good drainage and don't over water. They like good light and grow well in full sun. But if they've been growing in shade never move them straight into full sun, they need to be adjusted to it slowly. A general fertiliser is okay, don't be tempted to over fertilise to bring them back into 'good condition' rapidly....See Morenewbie2012
