New Excessive Heat Warning/Heat Adv. for New Areas in NE OK

The NWS has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for many of the same counties in NE OK which earlier had a Heat Advisory. Please note that the Excessive Heat Warning is in effect through 7 p.m. MONDAY.

A separate Heat Advisory has been issued for other counties in north-central OK, and this does include Oklahoma and Cleveland Counties. It also is in effect through 7 p.m. MONDAY.

You can click on any county to read the text of the Heat Advisory or Excessive Heat Warning, whichever is applicable to that county.

Mine shows temp at 94 with a heat index of 108 in N. Washington County. Yuk!

I'm not going outside again until evening, and even then probably not very long. The weeds are gaining on me.

I say let the weeds gain and even win temporarily if you have to. This heat is very serious. I bet the EMTs, firefighters and police will find themselves helping lots of folks who have one kind of trouble or another due to the excessive heat.

I don't play around with weather like this, so I'm going to be a good gardener and stay inside and dream of cooler weather. There is nothing in my yard or garden worth the risk of getting Heat Exhaustion or Heat Stroke.....but you know I'd rather be out there than inside!

Diane, Poor little Nellie. Glad she's recovering from the heat exhaustion and so sorry to hear about the tonsillitis. It's not easy being 4 years old. The cure for anything at that age? Popsicles! Ice cream! Jello! Pudding! (Well, if I was an overheated 4-year-old OR a 4-year-old with tonsillitis, that's what I would want!) Your hubby is able to tinker and fix and build anything, I think, which is great! The folks at the electric company are already hard at work calculating how much their profit is going to rise....and it is all coming from your pockets! I don't know what's worse in the summer: watching the electric bill skyrocket when the heat arrives or watching the water bill creep higher and higher when the rains don't fall. Plants are just going to burn up in this heat. What are you going to do? (sigh) Sometimes you can't water them enough to save them (even if you try). Last year I lost one shrub in a row of shrubs. Undoubtedly it was because of the drought, but I'd watered them all the same. The others made it and that one didn't. I guess I probably should be grateful only 1 shrub died. At least a cold front is coming although, of course, the use of the word "cold" is relative. For us, it will mean perhaps an 8-10 drop in the temperature on Sunday from Saturday and, of course, if that happens we'll be thrilled....but we'll be plenty hot even with the 8-10 degree drop. Dawn

Barbara, Hey, you don't have to worry about me---I have neither a heat advisory or an excessive heat warning because our humidity is running much lower than y'all's. Our RH may start out in the 80s in the mornings (last week it was in the 90s) but it drops to the 30s or 40s by mid-afternoon, so our heat index numbers are only going 3 or 4 points higher than our temp at the most. So, I'm better off than many of you because it has been relatively dry here. Having said that, it is hot. I try to get outside around 6 a.m. and lately, back inside, no later than 9:30 or 10:00 a.m. (Before it got insanely hot, I'd stay out until noon.) In the evenings, I'm only out briefly to see if anything needs water. It is just too hot to weed, mow or mulch, I'll catch up on those when the heat breaks. The fruit is coming in hot and heavy so I'm just staying in the kitchen most of the time. I also think I'll be making salsa by the end of the week. As always, when it rains it pours, but this year it is raining plums, peaches, peppers, tomatoes and squash. Last year it mostly rained tomatoes and peppers. You know how a kitchen feels when you're canning all day....just so unbearably hot and steamy. I am SO grateful we have air conditioning. When I think of what women used to go through, doing their endless rounds of canning, bread-baking, cheese-making, etc. in a hot kitchen with no AC, I feel spoiled by comparison. Often, I sort of resent the time I spend canning because it keeps me out of the garden. (Kind of a paradox, isn't it, because you can't do that kind of canning without a garden but then it 'redirects' you from gardening activity to kitchen activity!) Now, though, I am happy I have another week's worth of canning to keep me inside and out of the garden. I couldn't be outside exhausting myself in the garden even if I wanted to right now, because the produce won't allow it. With this heat wave, that's a good thing. I hope everyone remembers to drink lots of fluids, stay in the shade and come inside to cool off inside the air conditioned house. I am concerned this kind of weather will hold for weeks, or months. Carol, The Grove Airport's number is always so much higher than the ones from the National Weather Service or the OK Mesonet. It always confuses me when I see abnormally high HIs that don't correlate to the ones from government agencies but I think y'all just have a really, really humid pocket of air there around the lake and your heat index really is that high even if no one else's is. On our Channel 12 evening news, Steve LaNore reported the HI at Paul's Valley as 116, and I've never particularly thought of Paul's Valley as a real humid place. Today, though, they clearly were. We're always so hot and dry here, as opposed to hot and humid, that our heat index rarely exceeds 105. Today it reached at least 107 and you could feel it. I can't even imagine what 115 or 120 or 125 would feel like. Your dewpoint, by the way, is utterly ridiculous. I've never seen ours go higher than 78, and I've only seen that once or twice. For us, a dewpoint of 77 is exceptionally high. A dewpoint in the 80s is unimaginably high....and is exactly the type of dewpoints often seen in hot and humid Florida....so you have their humdity and heat index, but without the sunny beach, the ocean, the seashells or the citrus fruit. : ) If 84 is not a record dewpoint for y'all, I don't want to know what your record highest dewpoint ever would have been. The 84 is just completely mind-boggling. I linked the NOAA Heat Index Calculator. You can plug in your numbers and see what NOAA says your HI is. I'm going to do it tomorrow and see if my OK Mesonet Heat Index is the same as NOAA's would calculate with the same numbers. Since your airport is calculating the heat index, I cannot imagine they are not using NOAA's formula, so you have to believe their numbers. 102 here right now, heat index of 114. Hubby was out running new fence this afternoon and I've been in and out doing bits & pieces. It doesn't feel too bad, surprisingly, but we are keeping up the water intake, of course.

Very well said Dawn, I came very close to heat stroke several years ago working one summer in Witchita Falls. The feeling of lightheadedness lingered until the weather got cold and I still get that feeling sometimes when I get Hot.

Came in from the garden at 2. It was 97 with humidity of 23% at that time. I planned on cleaning up and heading to Liberal to see my oldest sister who is visiting. Got a call and went out to work. Was out 3 hours. When I opened the door on the engine room with 2 engines running and no north doors open and little wind it was over 130 in there. A true oven. I opened the doors and let the breeze move through. That helped a lot. It finally hit 100 here around 5. I have been around it long enough I know to go outside often. You know it is hot when you go outside and 100 feels cool. Looks like some of the electronic controls on an engine got too hot. So it is hard on everything. I'm eating ice cream, drinking iced tea and enjoying the air conditioner now. May go out to the garden late if I don't head off to eat somewhere. Jay

I am back from riding the Oklahoma FreeWheel cross state bike ride. Hottest ever since I started riding it in 1991! Stayed inside almost all afternoon. Only one walk around the house to see the plants.

Surprisingly we still have most mulch where I applied it before the flood type rains, that where here while I was gone. Dumped some water here and there, to keep from breeding skeeters, and came back inside.

No telling when I get the nerve to mow the lawn. Just to hot, and after spending all week outdoors this last week, I kinda like the AC.

Dawn - I agree. I'd rather be out there, but every time I try..it's just too hot and hard on the body.

Diane - for Pete's sake!!!! If there is a breeze and water, ya'll might be okay...but SplatMan has GOT to take it easy!!! I know...you're watching and that male ego can be difficult to battle at times. I'm prayin' for ya both..that you don't knock him upside the head and that he survives. ha!

Moni - I don't know how you do it. You're a better man ...er....woman than I. I'm not a wimp...but I love me some AC!

I'm soooooo dreading July and August...but hey! It might be totally different. This is one of those kind of years.

I was very careful today, but did stay out until past noon. By 1:30 I hosed down my tomatoes and new roses. I sure hope the neighbors were not watching since I held the hose straight up, and let the water pour on me. It was so much fun, but I truly looked my worst once I got inside.

Unfortunately, we don't have a choice to just stay inside many days. We both have things that need done, so we do them, regardless of weather. In my dreams, though, we lead a life of luxury and lounge in the a/c all summer. LOL

Temp is now 102 and heat index is only 111. That's an improvement. I think?

We just got a/c in the house last year, partway through the summer, when our then 4 year old got heat exhaustion. It's nothing but a little window unit but it helps keep it under 90 in here most days (and quadruples our electric bill!!). Before that, we just really enjoyed a breeze in the shade when we needed to cool off. LOL Now, if we could just get a/c in our van. We all dread going anywhere in the summer. Blech.

Anyway, that's life. It seems most of the US just assumes that everyone has a/c in home and vehicles and have the option to just stay in and stay cool when it gets too hot. Reality is somewhat different for some people.

(If any of the above sounds snarky, I sure don't mean it to be. I've been sick and the heat is making less than perky so I'm a bit... brainless at the moment and having trouble wording things. Is it winter yet??)

Yea - it's 96 with heat index of 108/109 here and guess where I'm going? To watch my son play baseball. Ugggh... Wearing white, taking the pop up shade canopy and a cooler of ice water. It's gonna be miserable.
