A proper introduction

I should have introduced myself instead of barging in on a thread (the roaches one eewww).

Last year I started my first ever flowerbed. I'm in OKC and SO has helped tremendously. He'll be reading this so I will publicly thank him.

Here it is this year. I need to take a new one with all the cannas in bloom. Being new to this, I'm grateful to read your discussions.

Thank you. It's sedum but I don't know which one. This is mostly full sun south and west exposure. A little shade right before sunset. The sedum has tiny yellow flowers this year and the bees loved it.

While the word variety may be used in place of the word cultivar by some people (including me, sometimes) it really shouldn't be. From an ICBN / ICNCP / scientific point of view, the terms have different meanings. I think the way Murky stated it was great. I had considered adding that to my original post, but didn't, for lack of a good way to say it without sounding nitpicky. While I also don't know of any bioengineered cultivars available on the market, a number of them have been produced and are being propagated and evaluated. Release is likely just around the corner (if not in the US, in other countries). Many studies have shown that much of the resistance to the technology can be diminished with proper introduction and public education. I don't think it would be proper to divert Semaje's thread with opinions about whether the technology is wonderful or dangerous. I was just pointing out the possibility in regards to the original question.

Around these parts, we use a machete to clear small brush and weeds from the fences, or we pull it out... the chainsaws are for actual trees! As we all know, pulling the stuff out by the roots will ensure it doesn't grow back for a while... until the next batch of weed seeds take over! About cocopeat... I noticed three distinct things about it when I used it... 1) it stayed soggy for quite some time... 2) it didn't absorb water evenly... 3) it collapsed fairly fast. Those three things made me rethink it as a bulb medium, and I'm glad I looked around for alternatives. By all means, if it works for you, use it... but for me, it's not conducive to good bulb health. I just can't wait until my seedlings from various crosses are mature enough to bloom! That will be an accomplishment, I think!

You have all been so welcoming, and after my day at work - it is very appreciated! o.k. - let's see - feel free to call me "hosta" for short, and I will ask DH to post a pic of our Molly. I will also ask DH to post recipes - any requests? He actually was a chef for many years, now cooks for me and family & guests. We have a veggie garden, and I preserve alot - canning & freezing. We also have fruit bushes & trees - raspberries, blueberries, pears, cherries, grapes, elderberries, currants & I hope someday apples - we can't seem to get an apple that is not misshapen from our trees. We both work too many hours, and I am also a grad student -finally getting my Master's! Both of my DDs & I are in school - DD #1 (age 24) for her Master's - she is a teacher, and DD #2 (age 18) undergrad at Univ of Buffalo - who here lives N of Pittsburgh, went to UB & has s sister in Erie? I will look back soon to find out - but I send a special "HI" right now. DH has 2 kids - DstepS is married with 3 kids - a DGD, age 7 & twin GS, age 4. DH has a DD age 33 - lives in Orlando. I am glad to be among such warm peeps - thanks!

Lilyfinch's suggestion is a good one for your potted roses. Definitely wait until high summer temperatures cool down before planting. Until then, keep your pots well watered. Maybe keep them in afternoon shade? After planting, give your roses plenty of water. It's hot in TX! If your roses are own-root bands (4 inch pots), I recommend planting them in gallon nursery pots in afternoon shade and then sizing up the pots over time as the roses mature until you have 3 gallon plants with strong roots and several canes. Grafted roses tend to take off faster, and bands require a little more initial care. I'd love to see your garden when your roses are in place. It's so exciting creating new beds! Carol

George, I think SO stands for "Significant Other."

Kim, what a beautiful way to get out of mowing! I wish my front yard had so little to mow by way of such a gorgeous garden.

Hey George, lucky you. When we're not working in the yard, we enjoy going to Tenkiller lake and eating at Sam & Ella's.

That was the plan, less to mow. LOL I didn't realize how much more time watering and care. But I've met neighbors I've had for years and years by being outside.

Thank you for letting me share. The backyard...has literally gone to the dogs. They are professional diggers. I hope some day they'll grow out of it.

You could "rent out" your professional diggers to neighbors who want to remove lawn and put in beautiful beds like yours! LOL
