I am stumped... My plant is doing odd things!

Hello all! I am so glad to have found this forum. I searched through all the messages and haven't found an answer so I thought maybe someone could help. I do hope that this isn't a terribly silly question:

My Passion flower has had blooms of and on and has ALOT of new buds form. But they are all empty. There is maybe one of the buds that you can feel something inside. Are these just leaves or something else? They all look like to outside of the flowers.

Also it does not fruit. The Blooms that have appeared are no where to be found either. I do hope someone can help, it is driving me nutts trying to figure out whats happening. BTW I do not know what kind it is. I have a lavender lady and the one that is having trouble is White Petals and then Purple tubes etc. Very basic I see pictures of it everywhere.

If so, it's a 'Blue Crown', aka Caerulea. I don't know what's up with your flower bud problem, but I might know about your 'no fruit' problem- most (maybe all, experts?) caeruleas are not self fertile. You need to 'cross' it with another caerulea - one that's not a clone of the same mother, as geneticly all clones of the same plant are the same plant.

I was having the same problem with mine.. I'd hand polinate the flowers (with pollen from the same plant) and they'd just shrivel & fall off anyway. (prolly what happened to your missing flowers) I solved the problem by picking up a little gallon sized caerulea at the store- I *knew* it was different stock as mine came from my sister's back yard in Los Angeles.. Now I can cross between the plants & I get fruit all the time.

Yep thats the one! Honestly I know nothing about passion flowers. I saw a HUGE plant 3 years ago and have been searching for one and found it. The pamphlet that came with said it bears fruit but is not for consumption :o( It does sound logical that the no-fruit thing could be causing my problem. I will research how to hand pollinate and see what I come up with. I would love to grow some more plants from seed. Thanks so much for the response!!

A newly planted small hydrangea can do with about 1 gallong of water per watering. Toi make sure the plant needs water, insert a finger to a depth of 4" and water when the soil feels almost dry or dry. The finger method system requires that you test the soil at the same time of the day for about two weeks. Each time you water, you can make a note on a wall calendar indicating that you watered on that day. After two weeks, you can review the notes and determine how often you had to water. Say, every 3/4/5/6 days. Once you know the frequency of waterings using the finger method, you can set up the drip irrigation or sprinkler system to water 1 gallon of water on the same frequency. Should temperatures change by 10-15 degrees and stay there, retest using the finger method again. Reduce watering in the fall and water the soil in winter if you get dry winters and the ground has not frozen. It also helps if you add 3-4" of mulch up to the drip line to maintain the soil moist longer. Wilting is very common with hydrangeas before they are established in the garden. It may take 1-2 years for them to become established. But normally they should recover as the sun goes down and definitely by the next morning. Otherwise, they need to be watered. The wilting problem usually surfaces in the summer months so coller fall temps and wetter weather should soon help. Try not to overwater as that can result in root rot if the roots stay wet too long. The symptoms for root rot are similar to those of plants that do not get enough water: wilting of leaves; the finger method can help guide you if you are not sure when to water.

I'm guilty of this, HaHa! Normally, I would plead the fifth, but I know I'm in good company, lol. There have been several species that I just had to have two of. I've got two of these gorgeous Rhipsalis capilliformis. I placed them each on their own shepherd's hooks on either side of the pathway leading away from my front porch. I've had many people comment and ask about them. My next door neighbor stopped by and told me that they're all my other neighbors were talking about, HaHa. Then I went and bought a Hawaiian spider plant, because I've always wanted one of them. My local Wal-Mart got some in and then practically placed them on clearance not long afterwards. They were so cheap, I went and bought another and then hung them on opposite sides of my front porch. And just recently, I bought me a second Sansevieria. It's a dark solid green color, just like my first one. I wasn't planning on buying a second one, but somehow it ended up following me back home. I plan on placing both of them at the front end of the pathway leading up to my house, which gets direct sunlight all day long. The other plants are shaded from the Sun, but get plenty of bright indirect sun. They've really spruced up the appearance of my front porch, along with this really nice Japanese Maple I got earlier this year. As for my backyard, I have so many plants, there's no way I could possibly have two of each, lol. :)

A few hours of LED light each day is clearly not enough replacement for plants (like echeverias) that crave full to shaded sunlight. Mine winter with grow lights up to 8-10 hours a day on a timer, even that is not enough to replace what natural sunlight provides. I set them about 2-3 inches from the actual light bulb, so if you can, adjust your lamp closer to the plants. If you are worried about overwatering, get a small fan to ventilate, and make sure the water doesn't sit in the bottom. Plants wise, your plants are looking fine. As crenda mentioned, flowers wilt and dry away. The most important things to keep watch are how the leaves grow. Healthy roots and leaves = healthy plants.

1) I mulch twice a year - early spring and in mid to late fall 2) as long as it is an organic product (bark mulch, compost, leaf mold, etc.), there is never a need to remove the old - just apply the new mulch on top 3) the "white mold" is most likely fungal mycelium. It is a perfectly natural sign that the mulch is being broken down or decomposed by fungal organisms. It is harmless. Sometimes you will get even more unusual fungal growth from a mulch product........it is still harmless :-) 4) types of mulches - or brand names - will vary from region to region. Use whatever is common or popular to your area and is of good value. Avoid dyed mulches (hideous!), those made from recycled rubber products or non-renewable materials (cypress mulch). If you need a quantity of mulch, bulk will always be far less expensive than bagged. FWIW, less than 2 inches of mulch is not worth the effort. 3-4 inches is ideal in that it is the right thickness to retain soil moisture, protect against temperature swings and offers the best weed suppression.

Well, I had a similar problem with the buds on my plant. I just got it this spring, so it is my first experience with passiflora. When I got the plant it was covered in what looked like plump buds, but one by one, just as I thought they would open, the inside of the bud would drop out, leaving just the outside petals. This went on for weeks. Finally a few days ago a bud opened in its full glory, and now it is covered in flowers, with more buds on the way.

I was wondering if the problem was related to it drying out while at the garden centre, then recovering, but under stress. I would be interested to hear what others say, since I was quite bewildered as well.

adequate water ( but not too much) is key during flower production. Also, I have seemingly cured this problem in the past with applications of both potash and epsom salt.

A few of mine have done the same thing- Picked up a frederic a couple months ago.. Flower buds all over it, which all fell off. It's slowly coming back, but..

I think what happened was it's from somewhere south, and when it hit the comparatively cold nights up here all the sudden that shocked it a little too much. I bet the weather floppin' back & forth between "build a fire" and "turn up the A/C" every 3 days probably didn't help much either.

So far though, I've got caerulea, amethyst, sapphire, frederic, lady margaret, incense, and 'pink princess' (apparently a mis-named violacea hybrid) to pop at least one flower this season. So I'm doin' good so far.

Gardeningmon, where are you located? I have tons of PURPLE PASSIONFLOWER I'd love to give to you. I love them and mine are so carefree and do not have to be cross pollinated, but they are solid purple. They have very few fruits. Mind do grow in the ground in part sun, part shade. I feed them time release granules plus super phosphate and water them when the weather is dry. I'm in zone 8. Your plant may very well have been stressed. I hope it is doing much better very soon. Boy has this been one heck of a month LOL~ Sorry that I haven't responded to most of you. I moved the pot to a sunnier (Is that a word? LOL) spot and it seems to be doing much better. TONS of growth and bloom and it's grabbing on to the other plants that are near it! Thanks everyone for the help! I hope to post pictures of my website soon. I need to update pictures as I have over 80 plants now :)
