If you posted in the "Tool Shed" section you would have found enthusiastic response! I'm one of those guys that loves to do it all myself. I have the chainsaws and even a chipper to turn it all into compost. For a chainsaw I think you are on the right track. Consider the Echo CS-370 with the 16" bar. You could get by with a 14" bar with this little cabbage palm but you will be glad to have the extra length on other projects that will come along. I also have a gas pole saw with extensions and a 12" bar. It isn't telescopic. I just add or remove a section as needed. Wonderful tool. I keep my neighbors properties and my own pruned and tend to do it at the onset of Hurricane season. I never charge them but I seem to get a lot of cold beer from them. For this tree, I would drop it whole to the ground since you mentioned that you have plenty of room. Buck it after you drop it. Be sure to keep your chain out of the sand as it will dull it instantly on contact. Palm wood is hard on chains to begin with. It is stringy stuff and actually has sand in it. It would be advisable to purchase an extra chain and a sharpening file so you can touch up the chain between tanks of fuel. One thing to add here is that there is more to buy then just the saws. You should be wearing chainsaw chaps, steel toe boots, and eye and ear protection. I have a forestry hat that takes care of the eye and ear protection and use it for lots of other chores like running the chipper and even weed wacking. The great thing about the forestry helmet is that the eye screen and ear muffs can be pivoted up between cuts. Have fun with the job and be safe.

yeh, you want to really grow them on the drier side during the northern winter as indoor plants. Watering every two days at this time of year is excessive (unless it's planted in very small pot with one of those soil mediums that holds water for about 15 minutes). I water my Areca (Dypsis lutens) about every ten days in the winter. I've never really had a problem with them as houseplants so I wouldn't say that they are bad indoor palms. Mine is currently under flourescent lights in the basement with the rest of the collection (extra humidity down there helps). And while HD (or Lowe's) is our all time favorite store to love/hate, I also wouldn't say you can't purchase great palms there for great prices. Healthy palms that I have purchased at HD include: Chinese fans, Foxtail, Manila, Parlor, Spindle, Triangle, and Dwarf Phoenix. And as the palms are overwintering under artificial light conditions, I pretty much get away with transplanting year-round.

Yes, at that size you wouldn't want to be trying to divide the clumps. Mine don't sucker that high on the trunks, that is starting to look more like branching. I've heard that there are about 40 varieties of these so maybe it's a characteristic of the one you have. I wouldn't consider that clump as large, in the sense of broad. Mine of that size are large as well. My tallest variety have few trunks but seed prolifically. So there's hundreds of seedlings coming up around them. That tends to be a nuisance. About the only thing I could suggest for those is to trim the fronds off and use a rooting powder. If you keep it all sterile then perhaps you might get roots before any rots set in. It's okay-I felt the same sickening thick in the pit of my stomach, too. But the more I became aware and read and did All I could think of was the BB and TRES. Last year we had both nesting and hatchlings in boxes. The eggs were pecked in one while the hatchlings were pecked and tossed in the other. This year the BB are virtually living HOSP free, I can still hear them in the distance and feel I would be naive to think that they will not pass through...I've been working with traps for the last three years and feels good to walk outside with comfort knowing BB are okay and doing good. Expecting hatchlings within a week! The TRES are looking into the new setup area...I feel very satisfied. I caught 4 male and 1 female HOSP in the nesting box trap before winter was over and 10 in the ground trap recently. Compared to 3 years ago that is a significant drop. What I also have done is if you have a cat. Just watch your fingers when the cat goes for them. The HOSP seem so innocent-they are a creation too, but they are little devils and will bully, harrass & kill just because they can!
