good egg? bad egg?

i found this little cluster of eggs on the back of a broccoli leaf today:

i thought- cool! ladybug eggs! i've been putting ladybugs out in the evenings for about 2 weeks now, and they've been chomping on the aphids. i've seen some larva, but haven't seen eggs.

however, my broccoli plants have outgrown the wire mesh cover DH made me, so in the last 2 weeks, the cabbage moth (butterfly) has been able to get to the plants. i looked at pictures of both ladybug and icm eggs, and some of the pictures look different, and some look exactly the same. a few look like they're actually the same picture!

i'm going to hatch these out, but in the meantime, i'm going hunting for more egg clusters. i'd just like to know what i'm hunting, ya know?

Looks like lady bug eggs to me... do a google search and see what you think!?

thanks laura, that's really what i was thinking. i did the google search, and that's where i found all the pictures that really confuzzled me :)

I don't know what you're looking at." *************** Yorkrose, sorry, probably didn't come across clear enough in my post that the red-banded leaf-hopper is a positive ID for my bug, too. gardenfanatic, yours is the second vote for saltmarsh caterpillar, and I admit that the pics I have seen of their eggs look remarkably like mine, at least to the naked eye. I doubt mine will hatch out, now, since I never "humidified" my jar. Probably just as well, I wasn't too keen on hatching them out, lol!

WOW what a great find, I can't tell you what to do about the eggs on the leafs, I'm new to raising cats. I have been looking and looking for monarch cats and have only found 4 and one died, but our first one came out of his cyrisalis this morning. on the other hand we have had plenty of BST cats. good luck with all the eggs michelle

Not an egg - a pupa. Could be a caterpillar...which may become a moth. See link below...guy thinks it might be a Gray Archips Moth. Here is a link that might be useful: Pupa within leaf shelter

Cam, that's funny! Not growing okra this year so I can't check and see if mine has those crystal ball 'eggs' on it :-) I love okra, but ate so much last year that it was almost coming out my pores so decided I let my taste for it regenerate before planting again.

I have no idea but last night I picked a HUGE bunch of Pac Choi and spinach, washed them in the sink, put them into a quick parboil before sauteeing in garlic and olive oil. I pulled them out of the boil and found a cluster of eggs that looked exactly like yours except they were white. I picked over the rest of the greens with a fine tooth comb. BARF.

Dody, Many insect eggs look alike and it can be very hard to distinguish one type from another. If you really want to know, pluck the leaf, put it in a jar with air holes punched in the lid, and see what hatches. If they are lady beetle eggs, you'll have little grayish larvae that look sort of like tiny alligators. They do not look at all like lady beetles at this point.

If they are caterpillars of any kind, that's bad news for your broccoli and other cole crops!
