Is it just your picture but it appearsto be brown. Arn't these palms pale blue?

I was wondering why it was brown too.

WOW Trini that is ONE NICE PALM!!!! I need one of those. "B" is not my strong suit in Palms, I only have 2 and I only have a photo of one. And its a SHRIMP, but at least it has nice stuff around it til it grows up. This is my baby Balaka microcarpa. My other "B" is a Basselinia gracilis but I have to find it out in the greenhouse. I may have to cheat and post non-palm photos for "B".

This frond as well as the plant at this stage is MAROON only the adults are blue after the maroon color
it is not brown.

No, unfortunately we are actually going to drop into the 40's this week. Sigh. I hate cold weather, but I guess its better that the ice that people are having to deal with in the midwest. What do you do when you have no electricity and its 0 degrees outside???? How on earth can you stay warm???? I feel so very sorry for those poor guys!

Bihai some of these people inthe midwest have been without power since the new year.If they don't have gas heat or stove, or a fireplace how DO you keep warm? how about the freezes in so. cal.? lotsa plants lost

Nucci, my question was 100% serious...how DO you keep warm? It doesn't seem like being in the house with some blankets would quite do the job. We went camping in late fall once in Northern New Mexico, and overnight the temperature dropped into the high teens- low 20's. We had a tent, but it was just too cold in there so we ditched the tent and slept in the camper of the truck. Even with 2 sleeping bags on an air mattress, wearing long underwear and all our clothes and parkas, mittens and hats, we were freezing our rear ends off all night. I simply can't imagine being in the house and not having even a basic heater. My heart really goes out to them, because I know what it is like to be without power after a hurricane for an extended period of time... its happened to me 3 times after Cat 3 storms in my life...you aren't freezing, you are dying of heat exhaustion and humidity, but its the same bad feeling.

Of course I'm lieing, and it must be nice to live somewhere where you almost never have to worry about even the lightest frost, and even have warm nights for those most heat loving palms etc.in mid winter. I haven't even one specimen of any cycad yet in my indoor plant collection, and I've been eyeing the Encephalartos pictured but wonder if sticking to the most common Zamias or some other more common variety might be easier? Dion perhaps.

Surving the cold without power. We lost power for 4 days because of an ice storm about 4 years. Winter time, temps in the 20's during the day and teens at night. We camped out in our family room for 24 hours, with only a fireplace for heat. I hung big winter blankets over the doorways to keep the heat in the room (brilliant). On the second day we sent our kids to stay with friends, they had electricity. We had 2 dogs and a cat and stayed home to care for them. We had electrical workers in the neighborhood and they kept telling us it was a matter of hours before we got power , that turned into 4 days. Long story short- we burned alot of wood and honestly it wasn't that bad. wouldn't want to do it every year.

THis palm was given as a gift (acutally a leftover palm that made it this way after a landscape project), I THINK this is Bentickia nicobarica. Can anyone add merit to that identification?

That does look like a B. nicobarica. Did it have entire or almost entire leaflets when it was a bit younger? If you can get a closeup of the crown, I can tell you for sure.

It looks like you have a serious garden. Do you post on other boards? Where are you located?

Got it with 4' of wood already on it, I can't recall juvenile leaves or not then.
