Almost Mother's Day and still clearing...

Hi all,

My newer home is on a second tier lot overlooking the beautiful lake of the Ozarks in Missouri. I'm finally getting somewhere with clearing all the brush from my backyard which is a very steep, rocky, clay slope with some erosion to the access road below me. We'll never be able to mow this area so I'm trying to find a good groundcover that will spread quickly, look nice (since the neighbors below me now look at a wall of dirt)and tolerate the weather here. It's a huge area so I'm thinking seed that when it reaches the road at the bottom of the slope it doesn't cling and cross it. Do you have any suggestions?

Any and all will be greatly appreciated.

You might take a look at the Grow Native website to find something that would take no maintenance at all and do well.

Sounds like you have a similar situation as PamCrews. She's also trying to plant on a slope by the lake. I wonder what she decided to plant.

There are two Sunset Hillside Landscaping books by two different authors. I've seen the one by Susan Lang and it had lots of beautiful photos and ideas in it. It made me wish I had a big hill. There is also one by Hazel White which I haven't seen. The books would help with design and how-to but as for what specific plants to plant, local advice is best. Natives are a good idea as Gldno mentioned. They're better adapted to our climate.

Which direction does your slope face and how much sun does it get?
I would be tempted to walk or boat around the area and see what other people have done on their slopes that face the same direction so you can see what does and doesn't work. Some of them may irrigate with automatic watering systems.

I tried a couple of ground covers but they weren't very drought tolerant and had to be watered regularly in July and August - but I was planting in dappled shade under trees where there was competition from tree roots. I tried a couple times to get ajuga going and it wouldn't live even with my watering. Lamium did great for awhile and spread and then it just disappeared for some reason.

Luckygal, where in the world are you? Somewhere near a beach obviously--but which one. Sorry no good luck on the TS shopping, do keep trying! Jeanne, I have two baker's racks outside, one is a corner unit--but neither look nearly as cute as yours with your collections and vignettes. I need to work on mine I think. That is so neat that you do the Farmer's market too. Candy, I'm another one who does tablescapes for my "imaginary" friends. DH will only eat at the table when we have company--rest of the time he prefers to eat in front of the tv. Karen, I didn't do a table, but I did glue a little cheese tray and glass dome on a pedestal and decorate it--can I get any points for that? ;o) Kathleen, the rooster napkins like in your photo that you shared with me are some of my favs. We don't do sit down breakfast often, but I like to just sit the table and display them on the plates because they look so cute.

Kathy, Ouch, me, too. My neurologist (I have migraines) put me on low dose Lexapro two weeks ago. I know, we don't "Mask" the pain, but minimal functioning is not enough, and I know me. I can function, work, smile when need to, even laugh sincerely, love, whatever, but I do have a low grade depression and some Post Traumatic Stress. My garden needs work, my house is getting messy (I'm a good housekeeper, not fanatical, but clean, so I know this is not normal for me). Went to a funeral yesterday of a friend, died at 84 (my dad's age when he died 4 years ago). His son in law read a letter Louie had written about his mom. (great). At the end, it said "If your mom is still alive, be sure and tell her you love her" Well, the rest of the day was a bust for me, and today (one day before mother's day) isn't much better. I'm thinking of skipping church tomorrow. The trees here are gorgeous, doesn't affect me. I have thought about seeing someone, but will wait another month. My mom's birthday is this month as well. She would have been 78. I"m 49, also have 5 grandchildren. They do help. The corsage thing I've not heard of. Wow. I really feel an empty hole. Give myself time, I keep saying. Let God minister to me (but even the heavens feel as brass at this point). Oh, I don't know. I sound like I'm being a baby about the whole thing but there's not really a close friend I can talk to who will understand. When dad died I was told by them just 4 weeks after to get over it. (his was a traumatic event, diagnosed w/stage 4 lung cancer, never left hosp, died a week later) so I don't have a close friend to spill my guts to. My husband is ok, but not quite there, you know? Thanks for letting me vent. It helps. Kendra P.S. I also feel annoyed and sometimes angry...normal for the grieving process...but it bothers me to feel this way.

1. I hate Malt-O-Meal. My mom used to make it a lot for breakfast. My family still laughs at me because it got to the point that my mom would cook breakfast and I'd go out in the front yard to crack and eat hickory nuts. I haven't tried it lately, but I'd probably still hate it because it had an icky chocolate smell. 2. My brothers and I loved Kraft spaghetti that came in the green boxes. You made the sauce by stirring the seasoning packet into tomato sauce. The parmesan cheese came in a packet that you sprinkled on at the end. It always embarrassed my mom that we would say it was our favorite food. My mom was a good cook and did know how to cook from scratch. 3. One of the most requested meals around here is grilled chicken that has been marinated in Italian dressing, steamed broccoli with a little salt and butter, and potato bread made in the bread maker.

I usually always send my Mother and Mother in law 2 dozen roses for Mother's Day but this year I went for a surprise and a change, I got them both a beautiful vase of purple iris and huge stargazer lilies in a pretty pink vase. I was a little worried if they would love them, but both called and just raved about how big and beautiful they were, I sure was glad. Iris and stargazer are 2 of my faves. I love sending them flowers, it is such a small effort on my part to provide them a nice happy surprise. My Mom started drying them and saving the petals for potpourri, it looks so pretty and smells good too. Congrats on your Mother's Day roses!

Thanks so much to both of you. My slope faces mostly East and gets full sun for most of the day. We've cut down a few trees to get the most from our view. Your suggestion to boat around is a good one and I will do that. Thanks for the links. I'll do more researching and eventually let you know what's been working. Thank you for the nice welcome to the area and the gardenweb also.
