Which roses will be best grow in my area???

HI..

I would like to grow some more RoSeS... I prefer grow either.. tall bush and climbing. I grow some climbing which are not so good growing due to prune too much, and maybe not good mix dirt?? I also grow Hansa (Lavander). It grows so big and mean! I wanna to grow more roses. Do you know what kind of roses will suits growing in my area Ozarks in zone 7.. I dont really like Hybrid Tea because it is leggy and skinny. Can you give me some list of roses would grow easy and fun? Thank you, Kat

Hi, Kat. Some of the Old Garden Roses are perfect for our area. They are more disease resistant than HTs in general and make better shrubs. The class I like the best is the Chinas. Then, the Noisettes. The Teas (not hybrid teas) grow well here, too. All of those classes have climbers in them, too. The Polyanthas are very good smaller roses and the Buck roses also do super here.

You are probably reminiscing about Hachiya. That one looks like a big orange acorn, is astringent until ripe and will splat on the ground when it is. But oh so good. I grew up with a Hachiya tree and just can't get used to Fuyu-type persimmons. But what did I plant? Suruga, Hyakume, Maru and Chocolate. Three of which are "cinnamon" persimmons - the flesh gets brown flecks or turns brown when pollinated and the flavor is improved over the non-pollinated ones.

rebeccah, it would help if we knew what gardening zone you are in. I'm guessing about Zone 6--but my Zone 6 (Kansas) and your Zone 6 (assuming that is right) may not be quite the same. Mine might be drier and hotter. If enough people post responses, notice those especially that are close to your area. It would also help if we knew approximately what size you were looking for and things like how much sun your new roses would get in your yard (hopefully at least 6 hours per day). In the meantime, my general advice to newcomers is to find "disease-resistant" roses--or even better, "very disease-resistant." Some places might indicate that just the opposite way--"very healthy" or something like that. Blackspot disease is a common problem, so you want the ones that don't succumb quickly to it. Browse rose catalogs at some well-known nurseries--such as Roses Unlimited or Jackson and Perkins or Pickering, to name a few. Check out what they have to say about size and disease-resistance, etc.--then check them out further by looking up the specific rose by name at helpmefind.com . Then post here, asking about a specific rose by name. There is also a search function near the bottom of this page. Type in key words like "disease-resistance roses" and that should bring up some older threads that covered some on these topics also---and some cool photos of the roses. I'm originally from Seattle and the SF Bay Area, then spent 18 years in Santa Fe. When I decided it was time to leave Santa Fe, I could have gone anywhere. I chose Roanoke, VA because I can grow anything and water is not an issue. The economy is stable, the politics are down the middle, the cost of living/housing is excellent, the falls are New England, spring is long and glorious. It's clean, green and beautiful, people are kind and well-mannered, the pace is gracious, and there are a surprisingly large number of interesting people tucked away here. As to roses, I can grow gallicas and teas, rugosas and noisettes and everything in between. Yes, there is blackspot for those roses prone to it, but not all roses succumb, and some years are worse than others. I don't spray, so I just live with it. RRD is an issue anywhere east of the Mississippi. I think northern CA might be the most perfect place for the greatest number of roses, but there are too many other negatives, at least for me. But it depends on who you are, what you want besides roses.

These look wonderful, Jeri. It's interesting that the old Austins, who were never thought of as doing well in a hot climate or even bred for that, are such troupers. If Eugene Beauharnais were only taller, out of the reach of rabbits, I would so love to have this rose because of its rich color, wavy petals and total cuteness. I'm amazed that so many people, including Mike Shoup, consider this a great rose in the heat. Purplish-red roses aren't known for that but if both of you say it is, that's good enough for me.

Most of my roses came from suppliers thru the mail. Sad, but we don't have many of the Old Garden Roses available thru local nurseries. There was one in Ft. Smith that carried quite a few from Chamblee's last year. I can check to see if she is planning to do that again this year. Actually, it was less expensive for me to order directly from Chamblee's in Tyler, TX. They are wonderful place to start looking. Healthy roses and excellent selection.

I enjoy to looked at your album very much.. I loved your roses. You are so expert with roses! You ought to writing the publish book about How to grow lovely roses? I never thought about Wagon Wheel Poles! I have a question about it. Do you put wire or string attached to the wagon wheel? I dont think you did!

One more question.. How much do you put sand on the top? What kind of sand? How do your method of mixing good dirt for roses? I mixed peat moss and dirt. Plant the CL roses in a big holes. Yesterday I looked at my Blaze rose and start new shoots all on long canes. I am so excited! I leave it alone and has not purne it for two years.

Kat, heres a web address to Ashdown rose website www.ashdownroses.com they're on a mountain in south Carolina in zone 6 so their climate is very similar to ours.and they give a zone number for each rose and they have a lot. Some of the varities you can find at Lows or Walmart. But I always check them out at Ashdowns first They have a few you can only get there. Anyway its a fun place to look but they are pricey. good luck , tell your DH hello for me.

Kat, tell Kaye your rose problems and she will help. Try to start some from cuttings. Seems a little intimidating at first, but if you fail all you have are a few thorn sticks and some potting soil to be recycled. Hope you find some roses you love.
