Forced bulbs-solution to floppy foliage problem

I like to force bulbs but there is always the problem of the foliage getting too tall and flopping over, especially with paperwhites. But Cornell University has found a solution--alcohol.

The American Gardener magazine, published by the American Horticultural Society, reports that Cornell experiments found a way to keep the foliage short without affecting the flower size.

Start the bulbs in water and pebbles as usual. When they have formed roots and the leaves are about 1"-2" tall, pour off the water. Replace with a mixture of one part alcohol and seven parts water. The alcohol should be 40% distilled spirits such as gin, vodka, whiskey or rum. As the solution evaporates, add more in the same proportion.

The article included a photo of plain-water bulbs and bulbs in various amounts of alcohol--impressive results. Too much alcohol will negatively affect the bulbs and flowers so only use the proportions above.

I can't wait to try this and thought I'd pass it along.
