what flowers are coming up in your yard?

My little ol' naked ladies are coming up! I've been meaning to cover them up heavy with mulch before they freeze come the next spell. It worries me a little. How about all of you? What's coming up in your yard?

I noticed a bunch of seedlings coming up from one of my plants this week. Someone help me think of its name! It's bugging me 'cause I can't think of it. It has grayish leaves and bright magenta flowers and I think its a common plant so maybe it will sound familiar to somebody.
My daffodils are poking up through the ground but no buds yet. Freezes don't seem to hurt them at all unless the flower buds are starting to open. The foliage is pretty tough. I don't know if naked ladies are the same. I haven't grown them before.

Christie are you thinking of Lychnis coronaria 'rose campion' mine has stayed up all winter this year.

Hello fellow gardeners... I'm Barb (joined last year) and I'm in southern Ontario zone 6a. It's April 22 and in our tiny woodland backyard we have Trout Lily in bloom, Red and White Trillim in Bloom, Painted Trillium just showing it's bloom head, Blue Cohash in bloom, May Apple, Various native ferms just showing fiddleheads and more hearty natives that overwintered are already green with foliage (Hart's Tongue and one other, can't recall which), the bloodroots are almost done blooming and are dropping their petals, the wild ginger is popping through the earth, the Serviceberry is bursting open, the Maples are just starting to open their buds, the beech is a bit slower to get started and I'm not sure about my new (last spring) redbud bush. It seems to be struggling but maybe that's normal for a new tiny shrub. The Witch Hazels must be a later bloomer b/c they aren't doing much at the present. Witch Hazel is new to me so I'm just learning about them. We hit a plant sale in the fall last year and it was one of those "take your chances" kinda sales where the foliage is gone and you take your chances that the plant/root is still alive and will come back in the spring. I don't think we will try that again because we bought a fair bit of stuff and much of it hasn't shown itself. We bought numerous red trilliums (no show), numerous Virginia Bluebells (no show) and numerous Solomon's Seal (no show) so it was pretty much a waste of money even though we paid 75% less. Even if a few had popped up we would have been happy but none did. The back of my property which we've planted all natives and removed all non-native invasives is what I described above. The front and sides of my property we plant all varieties of native and non-native plants and trees. All my ferns in those areas are either already up or are showing fiddleheads, the butterfly weed is sprouting, the globe flower is sprouting, the bleeding hearts are sprouting, the daylilies are about 6" tall now, the hostas are just poking through the earth, the Sweetgum tree, serviceberry bush and Witch Hazel are all opening their buds and I have one new Sugar Maple that seems really slow to get started but we haven't had any rain so maybe after our first good long rain it will burst open too. If not I'll have to go out and soak it really soon b/c it's been a really DRY spring here which is quite unusual. Happy Gardening Everyone. The yellow ones are called Bright Lights Cosmos. I believe you can get them at your local garden center... very easy to grow and they reseed galore! The whites are Shasta Daisies. They take a couple of years to flower from seed. Mark

We had daily visits from cardinals immediately after hanging our new birdfeeder this spring. Unfortunately, we also attracted all the neighborhood squirrels, english (?) sparrows, and rats! We gave up on the birdfeeder after the squirrels killed two plants underneath and pulled the birdfeeder down; it was a good try. Now our fountain attracts a pair of catbirds and the sparrows daily, the cardinals occasionally, and a pair of doves just recently. One of the pools in the fountain seems to be just the right depth for baths! The rats seem to have moved in under our porch despite the removal of the feeder, where we piled some bricks and rocks from garden excavations. Apparently we need to clear it all out to convince the rats that not only will we not feed them, but we won't house them, either. Sigh. Our campaign to attract birds continues, however. We just replaced some sad-looking lilacs by our porch (moved them elsewhere) with Black Beauty elderberry, which we are hoping will contribute to a bird feast this fall. What a beautiful anemone, pinkpearls. I love its pink magenta color. Where are you? It must be nice to have spring in February. Posierosie, I believe that you are right. I did not take on gardening until I turned 40. Wish that I had the wisdom to do it early. I am glad that I can still do it now. With regards to the amaryllis, I really do not have any experience of getting it to bloom from year to year. I am still learning. Do you think that the bulb can get to a football size if fertilized that frequently? I bought some "hardy" amaryllis to try. THese are called "sonatini" amaryllis and supposedly can be left in the ground up to zone 6 if covered with a layer of mulch. I will let you know how they turn out.

That's it! Thanks Beerhog. I'm not sure when the seedlings came up - maybe in the fall. I just hadn't noticed them. There's quite a few. I'm guessing I should've deadheaded my mama plant but I didn't. If they grow fast enough, I'll have some to trade with this year.
I looked for my columbine and I found lots of my purple columbine which has green leaves now, but didn't see any of my wild columbine that I planted last year. Do those stay green too? Hope they didn't die.
I found some little sprouts of sedum coming up also. Is it early for that? The calendar still says January. lol

We are finally getting a good rain , so I expect a lot of things will be coming up . Whoopee !

My peonies are coming up. Found them Thursday cleaning up
a front bed. Covered them up with a good layer of mulch.
Just bought this house in October and didn't even know anything was planted there, found plant tags while cleaning up the bed.

Phlox, daylilies, spring bulbs, sedum, verbenia are what I noticed. Winter honeysuckle is blooming.

Maybe you'll get some other surprises ekoboat. Does it look like the former owner did a lot of gardening?
Marian - We got a good rain here too. It's been so dry and I haven't watered anything. The hoses were put away for the winter. I've heard NW Arkansas has been even drier.

Helen - I'm going to check my verbena today since yours is coming up. I planted Homestead Purple and have had trouble getting it through the winter in the past. It certainly wasn't too wet this year so maybe it will reappear.

Is tiarella supposed to keep its leaves through the winter like heuchera and heucherella? No signs of life for mine. I'll be sad if it's gone. It had beautiful leaves. : (

Oh no, the hosta points are sticking up. I know the frost will make them ugly for a while. It happens every spring, but this is the earliest they have ever poked up.

Naked ladies keep growing out of the mulch,
Peonies are underthere
Hollyhocks are deeply buried...not sure they ever went away
Sedum is buried under mulch but coming on.
I didn't think to even look at my hostas...
I'm going to get out and mulch this weekend...I'm still paranoid of a good long freeze

Don't think I'll get too many suprises Christie, I don't believe the beds have been touched for several years. I did find some crocus in another bed and popping up in the middle of the back yard. I did see a bee yesterday which was a suprise.

I have absolutely NOTHING coming up in my yard. We just bought this house and I was given a BUNCH of tulip bulbs as a house warming present. I have prepared my area in the yard for my flower garden, but other then tulips,a rose bush that I brought with me, elephant ears, and the snap dragons my hubby wants, I haven't a clue as to what I can plant here. ( I am new to Missouri ) I like things that smell like cinnamon, and want a mixture so I can have a garden as long as I can ... any help here ??? lol
