Bad Weather Rolling In Right Now

FYI--the big dark lines of clouds with lightning, rain, and potential hail/tornadic activity have now crossed the Red River from Montague County, TX into Love County, OK, headed towards Carter County. I'm not expecting much--don't we have potential hail and tornadoes in every forecast in the spring?

Just wanted to post a 'heads up" to those of you who are north of me.

We've been getting it most of the day here. This morning it was thunder and lightening, and a bit later, hail. Heavy rain has been falling intermittently pretty much all day.

Dawn, I have a question for you because you probably have a resource, and I'm losing my patience researching this issue. But at one time, I came across a database of weeds as indicators of soil types, e.g., acid, low in nitrogen, salty, etc. Do you know of a source for this information? Thanks, darlin'.

I know I have seen information like that before, but don't remember where. Let me do some digging around (pun intended) and see what I can come up with.

The ugliest weather has missed us, and we have been sitting and watching the hook echo moving across the D-FW metroplex on the Weather Channel radar. Don't know yet if it was a tornado that came down on to the ground. My family members down there all sought shelter when the sirens went off and they are fine.

Susan, is there a particular weed that is plaguing you???

Whew dawggies!!! We had a fast and furious storm for about 15 mins. Strong winds, pouring rain, hail, thunder and lightning. Storm is over now. Got almost 2" of rain during that 15 mins. I had unplugged everything and had candles lit just in case and the electric didn't even flicker. I've walked around the house and everything looks ok. The plants I put on the front porch didn't even get wet. Tornado sirens were going off in many areas of town, but not in mine. Hope everyone faired as well as I did. Think the further north you went the worst the storm was. I did hear that a roof was blown off a house. Guess we will hear more about storm damage tomorrow. Rigo-sorry I missed you, I did meet your wife and she's a sweetheart. Kristy-So glad John pulled off the road. I couldn't imagine trying to drive during the storm. Lucy-You're right, I should have let the car get blown away. rofl I didn't think about that. But you know I did have a hard time deciding between the car or the plants to have the garage. The car won because since we've had accidents in both cars, we've lost our good drivers discount and the deductible is now $500. I didn't want to put another $500 out on that car to get hail damage fixed. We did get hail but it was only pea size, not the softball size stuff they thought might happen. Thank goodness. You folks in the Polar Vortex have my sympathies. Most Italians have no idea of what actual cold is anyway, but your current temperatures are fierce even by U.S. standards. Here we enjoyed the full day of snow we got yesterday, and are hoping for the coming night and day of rain the forecast has predicted. I have high hopes that the fall- and winter-long drought may finally break and we return to a more normal wet chilly winter. Up until now it has been alarmingly dry. Temperatures have been chilly, and last night we had a freeze in the mid-low twenties, but nothing anyone in the central or northern U.S. would call serious cold, for which I'm thankful. Current temperatures are mostly in the thirties, but two days ago I was working outdoors in the sun and it was comfortably cool, I think in the fifties. All is going well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for rain.

I just realized reading this that it described a former close friend of mine. She walked under a black cloud, always doom and gloom conversations, but she had very few friends so I hung in there. Plus, she had her moments (few) of being joyful. I had a weekly standing dinner date with her at my house (never saw the inside of hers, despite a decade-long friendship.) She was in a dark place and she seemed to like coming to my home (and unloading). It would always be just the two of us. But she cancelled on every other thing--including my wedding! I kept trying to keep the door open, but she kept slipping further away until I couldn't remember our last dinner. It wasn't anything I had done, she had a track record of doing this to others as well. I definitely think depression played a role, and she has a medical background. Every so often I'll reach out to her to see how she and her kids are doing. The answers are perfunctory. I will always keep the door open to her, (and she knows it,) but I don't expect a knock anytime soon. I think I'll write to her today. eta:I emailed her 10 hours ago. Just a friendly “miss you, hope to hear from you…” And got crickets. Neither surprised nor upset. It was worth a try.

Aren't you glad we don't live in St. Johns, capital of province of Newfoundland-Labrador (Newfoundland is island northeast of mouth of St. Lawrence River, Labrador a large tract on the mainland just northwest of Newfoundland)?? Well over a yard of snow ... in a couple of days ... with 100 m.p.h. winds. People ordered to stay off roads, so snowploughs could work and first responders could navigate. Stores ordered closed for four days, they and pharmacies allowed open today (Tues. 21 Jan), groceries were swamped, they allowed about 100 in at a time, many standing shivering waiting for their turn. Army called in a couple of days ago, they along with regular snow clearers are trucking the snow out of town, not allowed to drop it in the harbour. A couple of feet of snow had fallen since just before Christmas, prior to this latest mess. ole joyful

Here's the McGill article that has a table attached showing what some weeds indicate. The quality of the table is poor.

I know I've seen more current information, but don't know where, probably on some sort of sustainability website like Acres U.S.A.

I am amazed that this forum is moving along. Most of my time at gardenweb/thathomesite is on the kitchen table forum and the cooking forum. Both of those move at a slow snails speed, or mostly not at all.

It's cold and wet in Tulsa. What happened to the 80Â° weather???

Thanks for the info, Dawn. No, I'm just looking to see what kind of soil I may have in certain places where certain weeds tend to proliferate. I know it's more accurate to get soil tests, but it's just such a pain to gather soil samples, take them down to the extension service, pay $8.00 and wait for results. I'm trying to do it au naturelle. For instance, I know that areas where clover (melilotis) grows well indicates your soil is lacking nitrogen, but that the clover will provide nitrogen in the soil (am I wrong about this? I'll check your resource to be sure on this one). I know that Queen Anne's Lace or wild carrot indicates something, too, but not sure what. Dandelions also indicate something, too. Thistle (bull) indicates another type, and so on and so on.

I found sources that listed just 3 or 4 weeds, but nothing that was comprehensive. Thanks for the info.
