Comments (43)Hi Sue ~ I'm in Providence, RI. It will drop below freezing tonight, although the rest of our week looks good for planting ~ as it will be above freezing with highs ranging from the mid-40s to low-50s Farenheit. I've been planting one per hole, although I have included blind roots in the same hole as the sighted ones with eyes. ;-) Out of 35, I've planted 18, and ideally would like to plant 7 more in our front yard. I'll give one to a neighbor and will plant the rest on the berm between the sidewalk in front of our house and the street. Some of our neighbors think I'm crazy to plant there, because of the general attitude of disrespect in our urban milieu...people throw trash on the ground or in people's yards...people toss beer bottles out of the windows as they drive down the street...some kids stomp on plants or tear them out of the ground...people throw cigarette butts everywhere...oh yeah - some of the worst offenders - those who walk their dogs off leash and allow them to eliminate wherever they please. Our yard is fenced and I figure I can put up chicken wire around the berm to help keep out some undesireable elements. I've been sick since Thanksgiving and haven't fully recovered because I play outside in the dirt whenever I start to feel better (weather permitting, of course). Then, naturally, I start to decline because I don't allow myself sufficient periods of rest for a quicker mend. For now, I figure I'll get as many into the ground as I can...once our freezing cold weather decides to return for the duration of winter ~ I will stay inside and take it easy. :-) I noted that the roots I had packed in a real moist loam/compost mix look really great!!! Their eyes are definitely larger and their roots have grown. I stored them in their original bags in our basement, which is dark with our thermostat set at 55 degrees Farenheit (to prevent our pipes from freezing). I think what I'll do is plant whatever I can get into the ground this week, and store our remaining roots in moist loam/compost mix in our basement...I'll move them from their plastic bags to pots and mark them...if I plant them outside, their markers will definitely not last and I know I won't remember what I planted where....See More**Damaging insects on my peppers right now(yes, now in December)
Comments (17)Define 'large infestation' ;-) Do you mean where the buds and the leaves are literally obscured by and dripping with aphids? If so, I've had infestations like that, and Ladybugs took care of the problem without flinching. Generally, folks don't overwinter a great number of plants, and so the problem is usually much more manageable. If Ladybugs are an option in your area, I really feel they are the best option. Just spray off the plants to mechanically remove the excess aphids, and then loose the Ladybugs. In my experience, one Ladybug will clear a medium-sized plant. When I overwintered more plants, I would simply move the Ladybugs from one plant to another. The Ladybug larva are even more adept and voracious at aphid control. When the Ladybugs have done their work, I move them to my Hoyas, which are even greater aphid magnets. Josh...See MoreWould you vacation in the Gulf Coast right now?
Comments (12)I have to agree with tina61 as we did the same exact thing after 9/11. We traveled to the High Arctic, Greenland, Iceland, etc. Was it a hassle for security reasons, yes. Was it a totally different traveling experience on this side of the Atlantic, yes. But it was necessary to get back on a plane and get over living in fear of traveling both in and outside of the U.S. We had always done so before 9/11 but were a bit leery of traveling with my then 12 yr old, but it felt so good doing it. The folks of the Gulf need every person who can visit to come to their beaches, drink at the bars, eat at their restaurants. I do not think there would be a health hazard to your children as long as they do not suffer from any type of breathing problems already. If there were a problem and you had to leave, you've had the place for free, done a good thing by supporting those in the Gulf region. Most of all, I would take the opportunity, for it's teachable moment for your kids. We plan to travel to the area in the Fall and I am so looking forward to putting some serious cash into the pockets of the suffering business owners....See MoreCommitment level to the roses, pooping out a bit, right now? Comments (27)Kristine, Is your Bolero own root (what size was it when first planted), or grafted? I got my first Bolero from Stargazer Perennials this past spring, as their usual 4" liner. It went right into the front of the bed behind the mini Scentsational. Bolero has been surprisingly black spot free, and is just finishing its second flush. It likes to grow and bloom, but is not more than 14" tall so far. The fragrance is strong, but I am a bit disappointed with its performance otherwise. The flowers age very quickly. When the outer most petals are horizontal, count 1.5 more days and it's ready to dead head. The flowers also get soggy in the rain. They also nod pretty badly. Of course, being so young maybe all this is to be expected, and the faults will correct in time. Right behind Bolero is Earth Angel, which makes matters worse. Earth Angel has been outstanding for me from day one, planted spring, 2016. The flowers are smallish, but classy. Earth Angel is almost perfect, no faults, just smallish blooms, but that's really not a fault. If I didn't know it was a Kordes rose, I would say David Austin hit one out of the park, with this one, having all desired points of his other Austins, with none of their problems. Earth Angel kind of makes Bolero look worse than it is, towering over it in rosy splendor, as Bolero seems to shy back in awe. Moses...See Morededtired
