Passing on my addiction...Ideas needed!

Hi everyone, I haven't posted here much, but lurk often. I have learned so much, and can't wait to get back into my garden in the spring.

My sister likes my hosta garden so much she wants to start one of her own, so for Christmas, I was going to order her a couple hostas for delivery in the spring.

She has a few now that others have given her (very basic, common ones) and I am looking for suggestions of "must-have's" for beginners. I was thinking of June, because I love it so much. She doesn't seem to like the non-variegated ones right now. But I know that the more I see hosta the more my tastes have changed over the years!

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Also, where would you recommend I order from? I have ordered from Bridgewood Gardens and have been happy.

plantaginea [apple green with 6 inch pure white blooms in august] or guacamole [subtle variegation with 3 inch white flowers in august] .... fragrance of gardenia ... both grow like weeds except for one complaint on another post...

how many???

whats the budget???

i feel for you. my cat is the center of my heart. pets love unconditionaly and that is why they are so special to us. i hope i don't make anyone here angry for what i am going to say! i am a psychic and a pet psychic too. pets do have souls and spirits just exactly like we do. their little spirits live on as ours do. your pet knows how you feel. they know you miss them. your love isn't gone unknown! i have done many readings where a passed over pet spirit comes to be close to their owner. you may see your baby again some day when you cross over too! i hope i didn't make people who don't believe in such things angry. my intention is to heal and help. the subject is very controversial so i am taking a huge risk. big picture is that that doesn't make the pain any less. if my daisy died and someday she will, i can tell you that it will hit me harder than many people that have passed that i have known. something so special about animal love that we can't discribe to give it justice. they touch us in ways no one else can.

Passed my first inspection!! Now need help with insulation...

Hey Tara, The foam is a complete envelope of the perimeters of the house eliminating the need to insulate ceilings that are normally done in a typical batts or sprayed cellulose application. If you wanted to insulate those areas to help deaden sound, that will make things considerably quiter, but if you are going for sound deadining, that gets more involved such as when you have a home theatre room and are going for complete sound control.I remember as a kid a friends house where all walls and ceilings were insulated,(fiberglass batts in those days),and the house was extemely quiet. Being in alabama, i dont believe you will have the condensation issues that i mentioned as it is generally a problem in icy,freezing conditions that are lasting for days on end.You might run it by your foam installer for peace of mind, but even though your neck of the woods gets chilly in the winter at times, i think you have no worries.In your area, the foams biggest benefit will be to keep your house cooler in the hot summers as well as lower heating bills in the winter.There are differences of opinion about costs payback and how fast you will get a return, but i look at it this way: You will enjoy a very comfortable house throughout the year and are doing your part to have an energy efficient home.We were considering foam for our build, but was mislead by the only company servicing our area about venting (required), and in some cases where they sprayed homes in our area,the county made the homeowners rip it out and vent. This would have been a very costly ordeal for our build and was for those particular homeowners as the foam cannot be re-used. Enjoy your comfortable and efficient home!Best of luck with the rest of your project.

like my beloved and first cat, clyde...he and his sister bonnie were my companions thru a divorce, remarriage, and birth of my 4 kids...he was nearly 22, when I knew he needed to finally sleep...my darling dd took him to the vet for me...then there was the posse....3 kitties of a stray mom...they were my main stay thru graduations, 2 bouts of cancer, and marriages and the beginning of the grands...one was lost to ? but the other 2 made it to 15, before they had problems and needed to join clyde. now i'm catless, sigh and still crave the companionship...all I have these days is dh, lol...and while we've had 45 years, he still doesn't purr, or is unconditional.... you're so very lucky to have found another kitty to love and be loved...monkey approves...

It would help us to know what zone you (& your sister) are in and also how much room she wants to devote to hostas. This would dictate some of the choices...lots of space - giant hostas...not much at all...maybe some small to mini's. Which ones in your beds did she admire? For instance, I love variegated hostas with blue in them. My DIL pretty much detests blue.

June is a nice beginner hosta but they can really vary. I'd want to pick that one out in person to make sure you get the variation you like. Or if you already have it, maybe that one you can give her a piece of yours?

I fell in love with Green Eyes, Heavenly Tiara, Cameo, and Olympic Sunrise this year; these are fairly new to my yard, however, and I'm not sure of their rate of growth. For a very large gold hosta, Sun Power really impressed me with its growth.

She is in zone 5, I am in zone 5-6.

She does not have a large area planned, so I am thinking medium, with maybe one large as a focal point - so I was thinking of going more medium size, but am not totally married to that idea.

Because I am working on expanding my own gardens (recently moved to a 1 acre lot, with a hilly backyard with a lot of dappled shade) I don't know how many I am going to have to give away - the ones I am ready to separate, I am going to need for the next garden. My main one was done in phases with the oldest phase only being 3 years old.

Liberty is a top favorite. Two bright yellow hostas that struck me this year are: Aspen Gold, and Hadspen Samphire.
On Stage would be a good choice also.

You made my point about June very nicely. They are all really pretty to be sure. I myself prefer the ones with more streaks of blue versus a more more solid yellow center. However, I like and have some of each.

The larger one in the top of the second photo does not look like any June I have or have seen.

I would suggest Bressingham Blue and Francis Williams. I like FW so much I bought a second one this year. Bressingham Blue did real well during our drought this year.

Ester Opal - I bought my first June late this year and hope it looks like any of yours...

It is in a lot of shade, but these are a bit darker than some I've seen. The little one in front is my sport that came from a division of the one above.

You call yourself addicted with that either/or point, if you were really addicted you would have to have them all!

Jeff, the photo of 4 aren't mine they are from a lady in NZ.
Did you notice how blue the all blue sport is.
You won't be disappointed with whatever June does.
